Slow air pressure leak from front wheels

Featured Replies

I have a 2006 Octy with standard alloy wheels.

Since Feb both front wheels have been slowly losing pressure. They do it at exactly the same rate and even though quite low it did not trigger the tyre warning alarm which has worked in the past when we had a slow puncture.

It seems unlikely that both tyres have a slow puncture leaking at the same rate, is there another possible explanation?

I have heard of alloy wheels becoming porous?

The rear tyres do not lose any pressure.

Cracked wheels? Dodgy valves?

Take it to a tyre shop and see if they can find the leaks.

Sister had same issue on her octavia estate, alloy was cracked had to be welded.

I had a nightmare with cracked alloys on my old car, must have had about 6 different repairs on the wheels!

Corrosion around the valve stem hole or damaged valve stem

leaky valve core

leak around the tyre bead itself

nail / screw / glass / metal shard / stick in the tyre

cracked rim

You'll only pin it down by visual inspection of the tyre / rim and giving it a swim & being very patient - sometimes it takes a couple of minutes for the bubble to occur.

Thanks for various replies, I guess the reason I am puzzled is that BOTH front tyres started losing pressure at exactly the same rate and at the same time, weird or what?

My money is on corrosion on the inside rim.

I had this on my 2008 Octavia, it was affecting the seal that the tyre was able to make with the alloy which allowed air to escape.

My local tyre fitter made a temporary repair by taking the tyre off, sanding off the flakey paint and using a special glue to hold the bead.

Ultimately I ended up having all four alloys properly refurbished. No problems since.

Once I had a feeling that my car started "floating" when I changed lanes rapidly. I checked the tyre pressure and ALL FOUR had less than I expected (from 2.5 to 2.2 or 2.1) in some months. I don't know where's the problem because these tyres were brand new. The same with steel rims. If there were only 2 (or 1) bad tyres then I'd think that one has been mounted badly but now I can suspect tyres as well.

This used to happen on my 2003 Superb alloys. I had the wheels rims cleaned which worked for a while. Then tried filling with nitrogen instead of air. This worked well. The Post Office and Royal Mail vehicles used some other gas for similar reasons.

Thought an update would be in order. I had the tyres checked properly, turns out that they were leaking very slowly between the valve base and the wheel. Tyres and valves removed, area where valves bed cleaned and new valves fitted. Leaks sorted.
