I dread to think of what state cars will be in after four years, especially some that do high mileages. Its not unbelievable that some will have done 100,000 miles without an inspection. Im of the opinion that MOTs should be more like services, valid for one year or x miles and should be done from the start of ownership.

Conversely- low mileage cars .I seldom exceed 4k per year. Yet I have to have the same MOT as a car doing 20 times this.

  • Scrap the whole scheme and put it on fuel. Those who do the most miles or driving inefficient cars pay more. No complicated administration involved, just a simple "you use more you pay more".

    I'm not sure I understand all of the complaints about the varying cost of road tax.   It is such a small percentage of the overall cost of buying, running and selling a car that it almost pales into

    Yes Ive always said this...    But the governments only concern is £ and they see they can gain £ from taxes, and from telling the population they need A. Diesel ( we buy diesel) then B.we need smal

Originally Road tax was introduced to pay for maintenance and upkeep of roads. This then was abolished and the upkeep of the roads was no longer paid for by road tax but moved onto council tax.

With them now stating that once 2017 arrives that Road Fund Licence will now pay for the upkeep of the roads, is my council tax going to be reduced to compensate that the local council now is no longer responsible for the maintenance costs?

We have 5 year "safety Checks" (your MOT) down here in NSW.  Suprisingly, the <5yr old vehicles seem to be OK.  Some of the other states don't even have an MOT equivalent.  There's some real dungers there.

In the UK many car owners just need a slap for being too lazy or too tight to maintain vehicles.

Even to check tyres, their pressures and to put in air or top up washer fluid, even put in tap water that is free.

Many think that is what the get a vehicle serviced for and once a year or even 2 years and job done for £150 quid or so.

*The headlights should be checked at the PDI & services as a matter of course for the 2 minures it takes to check and the 5 minutes to adjust.*

* Many new cars arrive from the factory from many manufacturers and are handed over after a look over PDI with badly adjusted headlights and the first it is picked up on is after 3 years.*

Skoda are particularly bad for this, the factory must know this, but maybe Skoda UK just do not bother or dealers do not bother to report that back to Skoda CZ.*

 

Something the DVSA / DfT in the UK should pick up on if a Brand New car collected would fail a MOT on day 1 on the road 

because of headlight alignment. Then for the next 3 years would be a failure right up to when they are failed.
