New PC or Laptop. Apple

Featured Replies

I don't see how people can say that anymore. When they mean Mac's don't have such a variety of software.

Any application you can get for Windows' date=' you can get one for the mac that does the same thing. Maybe not the same piece of software but 90% of the time it has the same features.[/quote']

But people do though, a lot (not all) of people who use Windows PC are Anti-Mac, and also vice versa. You just need to to use the right tool for the right job. :)

Just have to decide which is the juiciest from the can off worms I've just opened. I dislike the security issues surrounding windows hence the can of worms with Linux and Apple.

Where is the best place to find / get this FREE Linux' date=' I've an old networked PC I could give it a bash on.[/quote']

KNOPPIX & GNOPPIX are good starters.

Bootable CDs which give you a live system with all the apps you need (dependant on your needs of course :) ), you can run then without installing on your PC. Very handy also for recovering non-booting windows PC, ie when windows has crashed so much it doesn't load, rather than corrupt HDD.

As for Mac OS on a PC. No chance. Apple make too much money from the hardware. Yes the CPU inside is going to change in the next year' date=' but the Mac OS will be *identical*. All the new programs will be built as so-called 'Fat' binaries. You can put the same program on a PPC Mac and an x86 Mac and it will just work. All the developer does it tick a box in the XCode compiler and it all happens automatically.

Ooops. Sorry about that. Another long rant!

Speaking as someone who has already witnessed mac os running on a pc with no problems whatsoever, I doubt no chance would be a correct statement.

You make many interesting points and I can see why people buy apples. they have come a long way. Just recently apple backed down and admitted that it might be better to have two mouse buttons as standard.

Compatibility isnt an issue for the certain things you mentioned, but you can garauntee that anything will be available for the pc where as the odd thing doesnt appear for the mac. Take google earth as one example. Not sure whether the mac version is available yet.

You'll probably get 3 pieces of advice here:

1. Windows people will say get a PC' date=' Macs don't have any software.

2. Apple peeps will say get a Mac, they look nice and do all you want.

3. Linux peeps will say, get anything and put Linux on it.

I agree with all of these, but then I have different machines to do the best job in each field :)[/quote']

Absolutely spot on there. Myself included
