Any buying advice for second hand VRS?

Featured Replies

Road Detective, read the thread mate, its diesel you want, petrol is obviously a dud.

Joking of course, but, to be totally honest, I am coming from a 1.6 focus and the diesel will probably be what I end up going for.

The enhanced performance (for me) would be noticeable in the diesel or petrol.

As I would like to see a bit of a saving on fuel, plus I don't really want a hot hatch (i want a family car that can hold my fishing gear that is reliable but with a a bit of poke), I'm guessing I will try a diesel and love it.

Basically I'm not going to spend a whole day to go and look at a Petrol car, so unless one comes up near-ish me by chance, the ones I look at will be diesel... So that is most likely what I will get.

Are you sure the vRS is the right car for you in the first place?

The 150bhp diesel in the "normal" cars will be a hell of a lot pokier than a 1.6 focus - on something like an L&K you'll have a lot more kit as well as more comfort and refinement than a vRS. If you're fishing, then maybe even a Scout/4x4 would be useful? You'll get 175bhp with a remap too :)

At that annual mileage I'd go for petrol.

my Mrs keeps saying she needs a diesel as we live 70 miles apart currently but she still does less than 10k a year and sitting down to work it out she'd be worse off by going to diesel just from the increase in price at the pump alone.

I do 18k roughly and Diesel only just makes  financial sense in my 170 PD at that mileage on my wages

On 8th July average prices in the UK   Petrol - 116.5p/ltr =£5.29/gal     Diesel - 119.8p/ltr  = £5.44/gal

Diesel costs less than 3% more; extra miles per gallon at least 20%  (more likely to be 25+%), so your statement above is nonsense.  You are using man maths  - choose a conclusion and fiddle the figures to suit!

I agree with what you're saying as maths never was my strong suit but she's on minimum wages so every little counts to her

But, despite diesel fuel costing slightly more than petrol, a petrol car will still cost at least 20% more in fuel.

Fisherman - 06 VRs estate - its a great fishing car

As a family car - well the suspension will be a surprise after driving a ford. our previous car was a Mondeo estate - the ride quality on that was outstanding. Handling was tidy too.

It took a while to get used to the VRs suspension and we are now considering a suspension upgrade as we plan to keep the cat a good while yet.

Personally I don't like driving diesels (the mondeo was a diesel), I like having a redline north of 4500rpm.

For a long time the VRs was our only car so did short journeys - I would always worry about the DPF and do needless log motorway runs just to make sure - thus negating any fuel saving for us!!!

Add a stage 1 remap and the VRs petrol has a superb midrange too. We do annual servicing but with long life oil so feel happy that the engine is kept in fine fettle (Yes it could be argued we are wasting money there but oil is much cheaper than an engine!)

Ive got the 2010 octy vrs diesel. What a car. Great midrange, smooth. And grt in fuel. Had it over a year now and no problems at all. Was thinking of changing it for the petrol version but gna keep it. Fantastic car. Remap prob coming up :-)

No probs with our 2010 CR VRS. Nearly 65,000 miles on it now. Had it since it was 8 months old. I change the oil every 5000 miles with Shell Helix and a new filter. Got a suspension kit fitted a while back (H&R -50mm cup kit and a Whiteline RARB) and a new timing belt kit and water pump at 60,000 miles. Got a Bosch 096 S5 battery last year. Also invested in a set of 16" steel wheels (VW T5) and Continental winter tyres a few years back. Its awesome in the snow. Wife buzzes about the town a lot and it gets some good runs up to the highlands and down to the borders now and then. No probs with the DPF so far. Been a great car and will keep it until it dies. Maybe get a remap but thats about it. Looking forward to running it for a while yet.

I've never been in the petrol VRS but I have 3 very quick motorcycles which I use to scare myself and trying to go anywhere fast in a car in this overcrowded land of ours, is in the majority of instances, tiresome.   The faster you go, the more you are at the back of a queue!   My Diesel is so frugal with fuel, its just silly (61mpg on most of my daily 30-mile commutes), but has soo much torque when overtaking, I seriously cant think of a single reason to have a petrol car anymore.   Now French roads would be a different matter - always glass-smooth and empty!!

Each to their own.

Similar torque and higher red line with 50 more bhp works better for me and as long as I get over 30 I am happy.

Only drive 7000 miles a year mind

Yep for a low mileage the difference in cost between 30mpg and 50mpg is not enough to make a diesel worthwhile IMO. I know there really good for a diesel but the petrols do everything better apart from fuel economy. They're quieter, sound better, pull harder, pull for longer and have less to go wrong. 31mpg long term average and ~42mpg on a run from my 250bhp petrol

Had a petrol VRS now drive a diesel Honda.

Ok not exactly like for like but petrol all the way for drivability. I'd only choose a diesel is economy is paramount.

As saif you can get pretty decent mpg from a petrol VRS if you drive cleverly. Better than you might get from some supposedly eco cars.
