The 280PS Thread

My scout has been flawless, possibly the best all round car I've had.

Like you, myself and my driving is allergic to derv and I ultimately decided the 280 was just too big for my needs and the roads and journey I traverse daily (country lanes, narrow and old city streets).

I went to but a 320i xdrive but ordered a new X1 instead (petrol) after seeing them on launch day.

Put £30 of 95 in the other day before I remembered ! Back to 98 for the next tank ...

After 8 years of driving diesels I'll be happy just to remember to use petroleum, let alone which grade!!!

Hmm. Just did 100 miles night time motorway at 45mph (er, x2  :notme:) and a bit of 50 for roadworks , then 20 miles urban. Maxidot showed 36 mpg.

What surprised me was a "green score" of 96 - and I was losing marks for doing 50 in the roadworks!!!

So what did I learn? If you want to "drive green", then GLF.

What's this green score billy ?

I am. It's the recommended grade, although RON 95 can also be used.

Looking around my local garages they only have either 95 or 97, so guessing that 97 is they best way forward.  What is the actual difference, will be Esso Fuel by the way.

What's this green score billy ?

It's in the infotainment "CAR" menu - "DriveGreen". Shows a leaf that fills green depending how you drive, as well as various stats and graphs, and gives a "green score" out of a maximum 100.

Too low octane can result in knocking/pinking, which can eventually lead to engine damage. I don't think I've seen anything below 95 (the minimum recommendation for the 280) in the UK so it shouldn't be an issue.

When the time comes to eventually move on from my lovely 3.6 I think a Superb Sportline 280 Combi in white will be my used buy of choice.....lovely looking car.

Mean machine, but yes, it has to be a newish used car, assuming that there will be any of then for sale in a year or do!

As someone who only uses a mobile telephone to make and receive telephone calls, and assuming you used a telephone to make that post...do you not have the opportunity to read it before you post it?

Just wanted to say was really impressed with the 280 Superb and a big thanks to Billyjim for letting me have a look and taking me out for a spin. First car in a while that has made me grin from ear to ear.

From a passenger perspective what a nice ride as well, Skoda have done well with the old car and is quite a comprehensive package.

and also sorry for being late!

I honestly think the dealers are missing a trick here - if they had 280s in for test drive I think few would be able to resist opening their wallets after 5 minutes! I've asked a few dealers around Essex and none have or expect any petrol demonstrators, not even the 1.4 - I think madness and a shame.  Maybe if diesel sales continue to drop as a result of recent VW events that situation will change?

Agreed, but then we don't have that many dealers to choose from, do we......?

FWIW, Winchester Skoda do have an L&K demonstrator, currently for sale at £32k.

Maybe worth the trip?

Wrong assumption, I don't think my baby Nokia does emails, & if it did I'd not care overmuch...........

I blame my laptop keyboard for any speeeeeling errors.....

Thanks for the heads up re Winchester though I've no idea when I'll get time to go over there.  And you're right - not much in the way of dealers round here!  Closest to me is probably Spire in Harlow - they were helpful when I popped in but again... DERV only!

Although mine is neither a 280 nor a Sportline, I'm glad I picked red!

Theirs a few nice looking cars on Autotrader.... Few 220 SE L's including a jungle green hatch and a lovely looking rosso estate.

Also 2 280's if anyone can't wait :-)

The estate looks to be a tad expensive for a used car?

I guess they are always open to offers ? Plus theirs always someone with the cash who can't wait 3 months....

I rather like my stealth 280,unless you see the chrome pipes it could be a derv 150,it doesnt shout look at me like the sportline,a quick dab on the pedal and the look of astonishment on other drivers faces as they look the car up and down at the next set of lights is a great moment, had a thumbs up from a focus st driver today, only a kid, knew he was beaten, wouldnt have imagined that a few years ago driving a skoda, respect! Im not sterling moss, but every now and again you just cant resist it!! A happy owner.kevin.

Other end of the spectrum last Friday for me. Pull up at traffic lights with little 'h' in the back. Oldish Audi A4 pulls up behind me. Its a 50 limit. I say to her shall we see what a quick departure feels like ? Yup she's up for that ! Never gave the guy behind even a thought.

Into Sport Mode, lights change and off we go !

Up to 50 and then  within a few seconds into a 40 zone. Select cruise.

Audi comes screaming up behind to within 2 feet of my boot then starts dropping back and shooting forward to his 2 feet position. I just left cruise on at 40. He then starts swerving from one side of the road the  other. He didn't see the central reservation with bollards and nearly ran into it !!

Past the central reservation and he overtakes, pulls in and slams the anchors on.

He then proceeds to drive at god knows what speed off into the distance.

I really despair.... Its getting so bad now on the roads that i'm almost..... almost... Not enjoying driving anymore ....

I quite like my stealth 200 ps (252ps according to AmD), most people think it's a diesel & no-one knows that it's a 2 litre!

Nothing like a "Q" car, even my unbadged EOS confuzzles some people...
