personal thoughts on long ratio box

Featured Replies

after fitting box fjw I can honestly say I prefer it as it does more in every gear ur not up and down the box all the time also car doesn't spin in 2nd gear as much which allows you to get the power down also its not any slower off the line only thing that annoys me slightly is my helix clutch as under 1500rpm it rattles a little so going to look into different clutch setups apart from that I think I made the right decision

I thought it was only 4/5/6th that were different ratios?

I thought it was the diff that had a different ratio (so all gears effected).

1 2 3 are almost identical ratios. 3 is a bit longer.

4 5 6 are the real longer gears. Final drive ratio is quite different.

But natuarally if the final drive is different then that will effect all gears to some extent.

Did you fit the LSD to it?

If your happy that's all good :)

Personally I think it's a waste of time,as the normal gearing gets you into licence losing/prison sentence speeds very easily, and also returns over 50mpg with ease on a run even with a GTB powered car.

I loved the long gearbox on our previous car (Seat Cordoba PD130).

70mph was just under 2000rpm.

It led to a very relaxed 100mph+ cruise on the Autobahns with the revs pretty low.

I also managed to get it up to 138mph (recorded by GPS) which I thought was pretty impressive.

Considering the Fabia has the aerodynamic properties of a brick, I can't say I'd want to take one over 150mph (on the track of course).

I'm thinking the video of the GTR flying at the Nurburgring...  The Fabia would become so light I'd imagine it would be very easy to lose control of it.

With these GTB powered cars you're already at licence losing speeds within seconds...

You barely notice longer 2nd,but 4th really is. I only got mine for two reasons. Longer gearing for motorway cruising and not to need fifth gear on a quarter mile run. Anything else is just consequential and gearing doesn't affect the way I drive. :)

150mph feels very safe does not feel light or unsafe in anyway

And here me thinking these cars felt light at over 100mph lol.

I know what you mean. At around that speed and above the Cordoba did feel light. Steering was very light and sensitive and almost twitchy.

The Octavia feels completely different though at speed. Much more planted and doesn't feel twitchy.

Mine actually feels very sturdy at 100mph and above, my other car a S1 106 Rallye however is the definition of unsafe
