just a thought, never been washed, but no rust at near 5 years

Featured Replies

As above, car does not get washed let alone waxed, cept for her first MOT Sept past.

When I pressure washed her myself.

Zero rust to be seen, i.e. when the dealership gave her a lick n promise recently, unlike some other threads on this forum.

So does washing n waxing only make owners Halos shine brighter, without any tangible physical benefits?

I was half minded to move this to the Detailing Section but they'd have a Field Day with that comment and, as I'm in a good mood, it can stay here! ;)

Whenever I wash my car it goes at least 20mph faster and 0-60 is significantly improved!!

I imagine the constant layer of grime has protected the paint against stone chips and the winter salt!

Erm, actually as I have previously postulated if not indeed promulgated, I earnestly believe that the constant application of aggressive cleaning chemicals, as used by the sponge or hand wash crews, i.e. caustic soda/bleach type products, (and I have a 20litre of TFR from the local motor factors, bought to clean alloy wheels once upon a time 20 odd year ago, and remember how it felt on bare skin) can only a death knell to paintwork.

that is all.

PS

Driving in a defensive fashion including leaving a good gap in front, largely prevents stone chips, and allows for  safer overtaking forby.

Anyway, how many of the obsessive complusive car-waxing types clean underneath the car, where the real harm occurs?

The auld Galaxy was mechanically shagged done, over 250,000 plus self serviced miles and 13 years, whilst the bodywork was still essentially perfect, certainly no rust spots, having observed the non-washing regime from new.

Car also never once let me down mechanically.

There are aggressive and non-aggressive cleaning products. If you want to remove all paintwork protection take your car to a hand wash.

Want to preserve the bodywork, then apply protective cleaning products.

Keeping your distance from the car in-front may save the leading edge of the bonnet but it isn't going to do much for the arches or sills.

This is the rear wheelarch on my vRS from a few years ago mid-winter.

That white line along the arch is a thick layer of road salt.

I had two options:

1) Leave it and let Mother Nature remove it in her own time, or

2) Wash it off during the cars two-weekly wash.

I chose the later for fear of the damage the salt might do to any exposed metal work...
