2 weeks to go!

Is that any relation of The Gumball Rally of the 60s in NZ?

Back on its wheels at last!

  • Wento for a quick trip to the petrol station. Got sidetracked. I am loving this car! It sounds like it's gargling on the fuel not just drinking it, what an awesome sound!

That does seem to be a similar theme - the Gumball Rally I recall (in about 66) fielded, among others, a Kenworth tractor unit and a notable pair of Mk.1 minis - one chopped down to a two-seater, the other a stretched limo - I recall they wore Rally numbers 1/2 & 1 1/2.

The start point was the White Heron Lodge in Kilbirnie, just down the road from home.

In Tauranga - made a quick trip to meet a fellow quattro owner Andy who kindly gave me a fitting to fix the fuel pump wire, which has been getting a bit warm by the look of it. The crimp is gone, now soldered properly.
It was a long day and I forgot to take a pic of the new wire but it’s much better now 🙂
Not the source of my issues but it can’t have been helping. It has been suggested the fuel pump relay might be part of the issue. Looks a bit corroded on the bottom but inside seems okay. But it turns out Repco do a replacement for $8.99 so that'll do!

So happy with my new black plates!
At least she can look pretty in the garage while I’m fixing the problems!

That crimp is well cooked, so can't have been helping, especially as vehicle temperatures rose.

Seems it's common:

"Ur's - especially of the WR variety, have a tendency to burn the fuel pump supply wire."

Have fitted a new fuel pump relay $8.99 from Repco, local equivalent of Halford's.

Also this is interesting from Facebook comments...

The ECU pulls timing gradually, using the lambda (if your has, mine has, or later cars had knock sensors), so a restart would probably fix a small boost leak, not a huge split.

So possibly a boost leak, will have a look at that when I get chance.

Windscreen has been re-sealed by the local guy from Novus. Dehumidifier installed to dry out the carpet.
New Zealand is such a small place. I filled up the car in Rotorua, 400km from home next to a guy filling a motorbike. Called a friend for windscreen repair recommendations, called the number and the guy that came round was the biker from Rotorua!

Time I peeled the vinyl off I think.
Though it does make people smile.
Have ordered new Bosch fuel pump, Bosch rotor arm, Meyle fuel filter.
New fuel pump relay fitted. Will search and test for air leaks at the weekend.

Saturday afternoon jobs.
Removed the hardwired CB I’ve never used. Will wire it to a power plug so I can move it between cars. Reinstalled the original electric aerial. Need to find the other end of its power wiring and make it work. I had to take the back seat and passenger seatbelt mount out to get to the wire, turns out I hid it well 🙂
Had a good spray around the boost pipes with engine start (best product name ever). No changes in engine note so that’s encouraging.
Changed both fuel pump relay and starter relief relay for new ones.
Finally removed the stickers and washed both cars.

@RobClubley - Did that engine start product make its way across the Tasmin Sea by itself? 😉

That could figure considering hitting the big bump in the road.

Loving the black plates!
Little drive, just under two hours running. No serious boost issues but I get a hesitation/missing around 4000rpm. This seems to be an ongoing thing since I’ve had the car on the road. Hoping new fuel pump and filters will help!
Wondering if it’s just not quite giving enough fuel pressure for full load.

In my fuzzy memory I would have sworn there was an O2 sensor on the downpipe but there is not! I even went back and double checked all of the photos from when I pulled the head out. So that theory is out.

Further things to check - CIS metering plate.
Fuel filter on CIS head (haven't looked for that yet, cant be hard to find :D
Makes sense to check that when I do the fuel filters and pump.

Someone suggested it on FB and I've been thinking about it for a while - is to fit a wideband O2 sensor and AFR gauge. It means removing the downpipe again though to get a sensor bung welded in.

Rad fan upgrade!
I thought my fan was getting tired, turned out it was rubbing on something! But I found this from @ccc_motorsport and it looked cool so I ordered one. Much thinner and several kg lighter than the factory one. Of course Rusty fought me, one of the bolts snapped when I tried to remove it. Sigh.

Spring vibes.
Great drive today over the Remutaka hill and back, the car performed mostly well with the odd hesitation. I think that relay has helped and the fuel pump will help more.

Quick clean after yesterday’s drive. Really impressed with Autoglym trim gel, it brought up the finish beautifully on the rear Coupe strip.
