Front suspension strut

Featured Replies

I'm going to replace the front shock absorber and broken spring on my son's Octavia diesel. It would be easier for me to get the new parts assembled prior to starting dismantling his car to speed up his time off the road and because I'm wary of using spring compressors myself.

Can anyone tell me what components I need in addition to spring, strut and top bearing so it's ready to bolt straight on? Is there a cap?

Haynes seem to recommend replacing certain bolts to be on the safe side, which ones?

Having recently changed the discs, much will come apart easily. What's the info on 'strut spreading'?

If there's a 'how to' on BRISKODA, can anyone post a link, please.

As usual, thanks in anticipation of helpful replies.

the only thing missing if you are not planning to re-use any of your old parts is bumpstop, dust cover, top mount and nut (although some shocks such as bilstein normally come with new top nut)

the pinch bolt (the bolt that clamps the shocks) should be changed as it is a stretch bolt and also they can get quite rusty

you will need a spreader tool bit to open up the hub to enable the shock to be removed from the hub

here is a link for a complete job on a golf mk5, although you can do it without removing the draftshafts

It doesnt take long to strip it all off and rebuild it all couple of weeks ago i changed my front struts took about an hour each side. I find it far easier taking the whole hub off to get the old strut out and put the new one in.

I did mine a few weeks ago and I ended up havering to replace a ball joint and a drop link as a stud sheared off the ball joint and the drop link disintegrated.
