Spare wheel & variable boot floor

Featured Replies

Just been playing around in the configurator again, looking at an SE L Exec 150 4x4 Estate.

There are two identical-looking "Temporary Space Saver Spare Wheel" options, both at £100.

However, one requires you to select the variable boot floor, the other doesn't.

Any idea why this might be the case ?

Maybe one is actually a full-size spare and needs extra height, while the other is a true space-saver and can fit under the standard floor ?

@ 31.20(ish) it shows the variable boot floor with the skinny 18” space saver wheel

Varoable boot floor is one of the most useful thing in skoda. You would use every week. You can stand up in the middle, so keep small things in front or back. I like it in superb 2

Agreed the floor looks useful; but I still don't know what the difference is between the two spare wheel options...

Colin mentioned that the spare on the test car was full sized (likely 205/55/16”) so they obviously offer two,

I am guessing here but I imagine the 190, 220 & 280 will have to have the skinny space saver as they are 18” diameter to clear the front brakes, and anything up to the 150 would be OK with 16” wheels??

I've just sent a query to Skoda asking what the difference is, I'll let you know if I hear back.

I can confirm that if you order the vehicle with the optional extra of a variable boot floor, then the spare wheel option is in
fact a space saving spare wheel, without the variable boot floor then the spare wheel is a steel wheel which will be bigger.

I wonder if the "bigger spare wheel" is a full size, or whether - like the Yeti - it's a "normal" tyre sized halfway between a skinny spacesaver and the full sized wheel/tyre on the car....

Colin mentioned

However I can say it's a full sized spare wheel well.

But doesn’t elaborate further, I assume it will be Skoda’s std full width (215/60/16”) steel spare wheel, it’s certainly not going to be a 18’ / 19” alloy for £100! and AIUI 16” is the largest sized steel wheel VAG make (that isn’t the skinny space saver)

One of the photos Danny57 sent to me shows what I assume to be the larger spare.

The size written on the side of the tyre is 205/55/16 91V.

I could hardly see that when I took the photograph. :D

Thats very interesting... especially as it’s not even a recommended tyre size, its now 215/60/16” 95V

(the lowest load index for the MKIII Superb is 94... on a 17” & 18” rim)

Was that with the variable boot floor?

Any chance one of you can post the photos up here?

It was a standard floor and not variable.

If Muddyboots is able to load the photographs (I am not able to do that) I have said to him that it is ok.

Thanks.

If he has any trouble then I can upload them via Photobucket for you.

If you send me your email address in a PM then I can send you the photo's over the next couple of days.

There are 20 pictures mainly of the boot and a couple of the front seat plus two of the dealers price/spec boards.

I won't have the chance to upload for a bit, so quicker for someone else to :)

I'm wondering that if you have the variable boot floor, with the skinny spacesaver spare, the "lower" level of the variable boot floor is actually lower than that of the standard floor, so the overall useable volume is greater ?

Can’t see it personally as the spare wheel well is going to be a standard depth, not entirely sure why the 205 would not fit under the variable floor, as that basically sits on top of the std floor anyway.

The only reason I can see for using the skinny wheel is to go over the front brakes on the 220 and 280 (petrol) engined cars, but as the review in post #2 clearly shows the 190 (which can use 16” wheels) has the 18” skinny spare.   :wonder:

I wondered if the "nearly-but-not-quite-full-size" spare wheel stands proud of the spare wheel well, in which case a skinny spacesaver could allow the base of the VBF to sit lower.

Hard to tell though.

Otherwise I don't see why you couldn't have the VBF with the bigger spare wheel. Odd!

Not sure TBH both my MKII Superb and the Yeti were both specced with the variable boot floor yet they both came with the 205/55/16” spare, like I say the variable boot floor literally sits on top of the std floor, so I’m not sure why either??

Here are the photos’s curtesy of Danny 57

TBH I don’t think you will physically fit anything wider than a 205 in the wheel well as by the looks of the carpet it is already touching the carpet (tyre is a 205/55/16” 91V) :

Also looking how high the floor is (to the rear seats and tailgate edge) I would not be surprised if the floor underneath the variable boot floor is actually LOWER than the std floor (there is no metal floor stopping it from being lowered) which would explain the reason why cars with the variable boot floor get the skinny spare wheel.

Brochure states space saver spare wheel not available with variable false floor. Page 31.

At least the brochure states what the crew protection is as the configurator just states when you press "i"  crew protection. :D
