How to best hide/fix/improve paint scratches?

Featured Replies

Unfortunately got a couple of small 3-5 cm light scratches in the paint. I can feel them with my nail and they are a touch white. Colour of car is metallic grey. How do you guys best hide/fix small things like this?

Hmmm, any which fail the fingernail test can be tough to get rid off.  Wet sanding and polishing can improve the appearance by effectively taking the surrounding paint down to the base of the scratch level (or close) but this is both dangerous for blowing through the clearcoat (if the scratch has) and for the longevity of the paint itself.

The scratch does fail the fingernail test. Anything I SHOULD do?

If you can't use a machine to polish them, you can use something like meguiars scratch x on a Microfibre cloth and work it in to round the edges of the scratch off. This will make it less noticeable. Then use a filling polish like Autoglym Super resin polish to help a little.

Alternatively, a detailer could remove the scratches by machine.

G3 professional scratch remover and the white and black waffle pads.

Couple of dots of the polish on a white waffle pad, spray of water. Up and down motion over the scratch, then left to right. Wipe off excess polish & repeat process if needed. Available from halfords too so easy to purchase.

I used it on my own car for a light scratch that couldn't be felt with the 'finger nail' test. Worked a treat!

Apologies. Just seen your last post. Unfortunatly would probably need a wet sand or a good polish with a ROTARY/DA

It's not a simple pass or fail, there is also the degree of nail catching. :)  If it's just a tiny little nick and fingernail barely touches it, then it may still be salvageable.  If the nail digs in and is tough to get out the other side, it's probably too deep to polish out alone. :)

If it gives you hope, I removed every single one of these scratches via wet sanding and polishing.  A nice little urchin had done this using a small stone "drawing pretty pictures" so luckily no serious venom.

Wow, how did you actually go about to do that? What products? Maybe more difficult with darker color?

Colour is irrelevant - your are polishing the clearcoat, not the paint.  That was pure wet sanding using wet & dry and then polishing up using machine/s.
