So I have a few questions......

Featured Replies

If you only do 7800k miles a year then have you considered a V6? Petrol consumption is not a lot worse than a 2.0l petrol in the real world and it has 4x4, DSG and elegance spec, plus the nice V6 grumble. I've got one and love it. Definitely worth looking out for if you can find one.

What is your real-world consumption, I.E. the long-term average from the maxidot, & over how many hours, also on the maxidot?

TIA, DC.

  • Or I can buy the cheap V6 & have £5000 to spend on fuel.....

  • I'm biased, but I'd go for the 2.0 TSi L & K, lots of nice toys, + good performance.   If you need to go faster, then I'd suggest a remap...   DC

When's the quad-piped L&K visit taking place?!?

Surely the buggy will fit diagonally? If you're keeping the car for a while then it won't be long until your youngest is in one of those much smaller light-weight pushchairs, and then in nothing?

I need to think about putting the dog in the boot too. He is already in one of the light folding buggies.

I reset the maxi dot when I got it 12 months ago and my long term average according to that is 27.5mpg. My driving is mostly a 14 mile commute (7 miles each way) this is mostly a roads and then the last couple of miles is crawling through town. Believe it or not as an experiment i had to do an early morning trip to Chester. I tried as hard as I could to reach the maximum mpg I could and achieved an indicated 41mpg. This is not achievable day to day and was driving in an attempt to get maximum mpg with no other traffic on the road! But it does show what's possible. On a trip to the south coast fully loaded I got 32mpg this was mostly motorway. Generally I drive the car not aggressively but I do use the power wher I can and enjoy the car to the limits of my ability, (the car has far more talent than I do).

I looked at various Superbs but the purchase price was all to me as I plan to effectively throw cars away (in 10 years) depreciation is not important. I recentley ended up paying just over £10k for 14 plate 1.4tsi with 14k - just under 2 years manufacturers warranty left. S spec but still has cruise, steering wheel controls, bluetooth, maxidot

Presuming the cam chain issue doesn't bite me (it's the latest version of this engine, I plan very regular oil changes and will never allow the engine to turn backwards) I plan to keep for 10 years.

The nearest 2.0 diesel was many £thousands away (found the 1.6 sluggish - even compared to the 1.4tsi) and the 1.4 performed better than I expected (mind you I'd love the V6 if I could afford the fuel/tax) and the petrol was soooo quiet

Thank you so much for an informative & very useful reply.

My maxidot resets itself every 100 hours of running, but last time I checked the long-term average was 37+ mpg over 10+ hours.

I haven't driven it for a week or so, but I'vet managed to get it up to 45 mpg on the 19 miles trip from one house to 't other.

That was approx 15 miles with the cruise set on 60 mph, & the rest on slower roads, but with zero traffic problems & twp brief stops at junctions.

I've managed to do the same trip in SWMBO's Octy vRS & get it up to 46+ mpg, & in my EOS too, at 41 mpg (but that was with the roof down, much more drag then when it reverts to being a normal coupe), all trips on comparable light traffic & cruising speeds.

For your regular commute 27 mpg seems to be very acceptable, all of my three  of V6 Mondeos would have produced similar results.

So, keep search for a nice but affordable late-model V6, or wait for the new car.....

Thanks again for you info, DC.

I've posted elsewhere about 'real world' mileage on my V6 DSG estate.

The post above is pretty spot on I reckon.

Non maxi-dot I can get 30mpg on a run. Daily commute is between 27/30 mpg (a 12 mile each way trip).

Hooning in sport with paddles you are down to low 20's   :giggle:

Food for thought - that's about the same mpg as I used to get out of a Vauxhall Viva 1256 many moons ago - Wow snail to monster in 30 years with same mpg, how technology has moved on!

I ran a Ford Zodiac MKIV 3.0 V6 for a while and you had to ensure engine was turned off when filling up - to stop gaining on them!

Don't know whether I dare try a V6 - might not be able to resist

I can remember when it only took £5 to fill the tank of a Mk 4 Zephyr! Lot's of space & "interesting" styling......but no faster than the Mk2 Cortina GT replacement.

Cheapest I can remember petrol was 5s 11d (about 34p) when I was still at school and riding M/Bikes.

I recall my Mum asking the petrol pump attendant to fill her 1950 Ford Prefect with "four 4 and 4 please", which was four gallons of petrol at 4s 4d a gallon.... That's 21p a gallon!

All 19 gallons!
