Does cutting the foam plastic do any harm? I think it is supposed to block water from going into the engine compartment, how is it doing after cutting it?

This solution is tested one and half year on my car and cars others people from czech Skoda forum. No water, no more dust on the engine space. And this plastic foam part is not designed for water sealing, water not go on this side of the car body.

Who are these for?

Drivers without arms to open the bonnet?  :giggle:

It's bloody heavy, I wouldn't bother.

Has anyone seen the latest Ford ad, a kid kicks the rear bumper and the rear hatch opens by itself.

If it was my kid I'd......

But that would be cruel.

Agree. That's what warning lights are for :)

Having already had one rear hinged bonnet fly open and smash the svreen at 50mph, theres no way I'd have a gas strut fitted to enhance the effect.

heavy? no more so than other cars I've had.

I would say the Rapid bonnet is very heavy for its size. In comparison, the Citroen C4 bonnet was made of aluminium, you could lift it easily with your little finger (which is why they didn't bother fitting gas struts).

Gas struts on a bonnet are a nice to have as a factory-fit feature, and they've been factory-fitted on several cars I've owned (Rover 75, Jaguar S-Type, Peugeot 106 for example). However, I can happily live without them and wouldn't bother retrofitting them. If anyone here is having to open the bonnet more than once a week for your regular fluids check, you've got a bigger issue than a lack of gas struts :)

^^^^ Yep I think it's heavy. My Mazda also has an aluminium bonnet and boot lid, very light obviously in comparison to the Toledo. Downside to ali, they corrode and the paint is flaking off in places, but that's poor paint prep by Mazda I reckon.

My Octavia 2 was heavy. Even when in the open position it drooped on one side because of its weight.

Yep - the aluminium bonnet on the C4 had flakey paint problems as well - a common problem with that car, due to poor prep on the line preventing primer and paint from bonding properly to it.

It's not that it's heavy or that I am lazy. I just like the feeling of a hood opening by itself.

And as long as the lock mechanism is OK, there is no danger of opening when moving.

Surely just lifting it up is easier and cheaper as the strut(s) are just a gimmick.

My Astra H had struts, but I wouldn't add them to my Rapid. Mainly 'cos I'm tight :)
