Issue with new car

Featured Replies

Well, it's new to me! Bought a 2010 Skoda Octavia 1.6tdi with 65k on the clock a couple of weeks ago and within 500 miles it broke down. Glow plug lights came on after driving on motorway for an hour, out of the blue, bit of white smoke and when I pulled over it wouldn't start. I didn't misfuel it and have driven 500m ish since filling it with diesel.

Breakdown guys couldn't see why and showed no fault codes. Towed to a mechanic who gave a quote saying all injectors need replacing, fuel pump replacing, fuel rail replacing and the bill would be £4,000! I might have missed some other bits that need replacing (I'm no mechanic!) but that was the jist I believe. He said the fuel pump had disintegrated... not sure what to think about that!

Called the small dealer I bought the car off, they had it towed to their garage and are fixing it for me. They've said it needs a new fuel pump and one injector replaced (not all of them) and no mention of fuel rail etc.

Does it sound like the dealer is trying to perhaps do it on the cheap or does it not need all the work the other mechanic said? Sorry I can't give a lot more info really!

Sounds like the mechanic was being over cautious whereas the dealer is doing the minimal repair job. IMHO if the fuel pump has disintegrated I would pointedly ask the garage to confirm that the rest of the fuel system has not been contaminated (preferably by email or letter so that you have a record) and/or asked them if the whole fuel system shouldn't be flushed out/cleaned.

To be fair you have to the give the supplying dealer a chance to fix it.

If when you get the car back it still isn't right then you are within your rights to ask for a refund.

Got car back today and drove home, seems fine but then it seemed fine beforehand too.

They have asked for £250 as excess on the warranty. I have not paid this yet and had no indication I would have to before, would you pay it? I also have no record of what they've done and they said they'll send that after excess is paid!

Sales of goods act, 500 mile and the car goes bang, no chance I'd be paying £250 towards a fault car having covered such short mileage! They should be covering it!

Was it a franchise Skoda dealer or a car dealer. ?

Car dealer

If the pump has disintegrated. There's likely to be swarf in the rail and inevitably the injectors. I think they have done the minimum amount to repair it. ...but only time will tell. I suspect it's possible that this vehicle has been miss fuelled in the past and been run. Good luck with it. I would give the car back and want my money back .

This is also my concern. But it's a small dealer, and they will refuse to take the car back. I'll end up just fighting through the courts and probably get nowhere.

Anything else I can do at this stage to try and improve the chances it doesn't fail, without spending a fortune on another mechanic?

My advice would be to trade it in for something similar while it's running ok. If there is any swarf in the system you will get issues.
