Featured Replies

For now anyway.

It has been a great 5 years in the Skoda family but this year I just felt I needed a change.

Met some great members on here and got some great tips and advice.

I will still pop in here from time to time to keep in touch.

Could very possibly be back again in 2 years time

I was hoping to get a price on a new superb but I couldn't get a price soon enough.

I went for a New Passat 150bhp Highline ( GT in the UK ?? )

Added Bussiness edition = LED heads / Dims and 8" Discover Pro headunit

Also added sports pack = Leather and 18" alloys

Added heated Windscreen.

So the skoda story so far is as follows.

Started in 2010 with this

Then 2012 this

Then to this in 2013

In the meantime my son joined forces for a while with this

Yes,
170 to 150 but same torque and 70kg lighter .
And lots lots more toys and comfort
thanks

I'd be interested to hear about the LED headlights and how you think they compare.....

150 TDI motor with reduced weight will provide comparable performance to the vRS CR 170. My 150 TDI is quicker than my old 170.

Is down on torque though I am sure....236 v 258...you wouldnt know by driving it though.

I nearly took a Mk8 150 GT as a company car went Mk7 Golf GTD instead in the end but wasnt an easy decision.

Well

5 days in and I can only give my honest opinion.

First off.

I simply cannot get over just how quiet this car is compared tot he vRS.

So much so i could honestly say I would never again buy a vRS unless Skoda do something with that unbearable road noise.

Everything about this car is in a different league.

I hate to be running the Ovty down but there you go.

I collected it on Monday around 4.30 pm so not much chance to do any driving as I only live about 1km from the dealer.

Tuesday I went for a maiden voyage to a city called Waterford and back ( close on 200kms I guess )

First time in a long time I actually enjoyed the drive.

On that same trip in any of my vRS models the best i would manage would be approx 47 ~ 48 mpg.

on the way home I saw 59.9 mpg.

Thought I was seeing things.

Took this shot after getting home and driving around town so it dropped a little

2015-08-11%2018.46.37_zpsg0fxmfbt.jpg

I have been pottering about town since and nothing more. It is still showing 51~52mpg average.

Oh. and did I mention it was quiet?

All the toys work as expected. Loving this car.

Tonight I went for my first drive after dark

Went on a spin about  to check out the LED heads /dims.

Start the car and the lights do the up / down sequence to level themselves out.

Drove out of town on dims which are a huge step up from the HID kits I had in the Octy's.

Got out of town and [put on the brights eek.png

Wow is the only word. Super white light.

Was so taken up with them it never dawned on the they auto dipped for an oncoming car before I could hit the stalk. Then it occurred to me that they are "adaptive" I think is the word.

One other thing struck me tonight.

Not sure if I mentioned it but this car is damned quiet :D

Other than that.

Here are a few pics.

The lights will be the assistance ones I reckon. I had the early generation ones on the MKII which adapted to your speed, not environment, those were mad in the fog and rain as you could see the effect very clearly. Video on adaptive/assistance/ clever candles:

The MKIII superb, platform sharing to the passat, is like you say, just better, it's an evolution. On the test we did in scotland, which is a coarse tarmac, like the roads around Wicklow hills IIRC, anyhow very quiet even at pace. That's quiet from road and 'is the engine on' quiet.

Enjoy the ride, keep in touch too :)

Vectra, you haven't mentioned how quiet the new car is,   :notme:    Well not for 5 minuites anyway    :x

Mrs Goldfinger was telling me that she was looking at having the 'quiet' modification fitted to Mr Goldfinger. No doubt she'd keep telling us how good it was too! :p

Did I forget to mention above how quiet this is  :notme:

haha

I will of course stay in touch Colin.

Just because I like this car doesn't mean I wouldnt end up in a Superb or a "Quiet" vRS next time  :p

I guess to be fair to Skoda you are comparing a MkII Octavia to a brand new Passat. The Octy first arrived in the UK back in 2004, 11 years ago now, an old car.

I'm not VW bashing, nor am I blinded by Skoda loyalty either (I'd swap brands in a heart beat for the right car), I wonder if a comparison on the noise between a MkIII Octavia would be closer?

If the MkIII Superb is based on your Passat here's hoping it is as quiet.

To make a car truly quiet usually costs money through design and proper sound proofing so it is a testament to the quality of the latest Passat, it sounds like a cracking car.

I have my Skoda serviced with a dealer that sells both VW's and Skoda's. Whilst wandering the showroom I noticed that the latest Passat estate they had in (I think it was called a Business Edition?) had 17" alloys fitted, nothing unusual there but the profile of the tyres was huge, much higher than I'm used to seeing.

First thing to strike me was how good it looked, they filled the arches really well without having to go for the regular 18" or 19" alloys and secondly it was clear they would afford much more protection against potholes. I wonder if this change in direction is related to comfort or economy or both?

Enjoy the Passat, it looks a great car, I'm a fan of white too - if only they could make it a hatchback!

Stick around and keep us posted with how things progress, those in the same position as you who are looking to step up will be very interested on your feedback, especially those contemplating ordering the new Superb.

Hi Silver101.

I actually test drove a Mk3 vRS and a Mk3 elegance Octy. Once I hit 100kph It sounded just like the mk2 did so it was not going to be an option for me.

I went for the 18" dartfort alloys. as you sat they have a higher profile so this would certainly add the the comfort and quietness. ( 235/45/18 )

As you say, It would have been better if it were a hatch but then again this might take from the soundproofing and add some road noise as saloons are normally quieter thn Hatches.

Will keep you posted on the progress of it.

Thanks for the well wishes.

Just drove my Mk3 2.0 TDI Elegance estate properly for the first time in a good while since getting a Mk7 GTD and it surprised me the difference in NVH by comparison.

Struck me the Octavia goes bloody well and drives nicely but the Golf is alot more refined....and that is despite the fact the Golf has much lower and stiffer suspension.

The engine feels v course and noisy when revved....much less so in the Golf and the 184 motor will be inherrently less refined (typically more power more noise where VAG 4 cyl diesels are concerned)....still get a fair amount of tyre roar but next to no wind noise.

Much more a case of how its put together rather than the materials used....but I think the Octavia has far less sound deadening materials. If there is that much difference between the two I can quite imagine how quiet the Passat is.

Nearly got a Passat GT instead of the Golf but I could only get a 150 TDI and thought it'd probably be a bit dull to drive compared to the Golf....but a lovely big car to live with day to day. If I could have had a 190 I might have chosen differently.

Getting back to the Octy I dont care though.....as lovely as the Golf is, its bloody tiny by comparison and 28 v 23k the Octavia is without argument a whole heap of car by comparision.....given you can pay 23k for a spec'd up VW Polo I can forgive it some of its minor shortcommings and is not that noisy really.

It is well known that Skodas are built "noisy on purpose" comparing to Passat.

Passat is Passat!...and VW will never let Skoda "that much" to close to Passat. There is no "rocket science" here so...good luck with the new car, it is VERY NICE! :)

Same applies to the seats too, vw's get superior seats compared to the equivalent skoda. The new seats in passat are suppose to be approved by back specialist for comfort and support.

That does look very nice (I’m off to configure one to the Superb L&K spec :D  )

+1

I usually dismiss the Passat as the MKI and MKII superb were IMO better all round than the equivalent Passat, one thin for sure though is if the price is not loads more than the Superb then I intend to drive them both now!

Did I forget to mention above how quiet this is  :notme:

Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So it's quiet then

Obviously not  :D

So far my configured car is just over £40K!

Granted it has a few things the L&K doesn’t (LED headlights and massaging seats etc) but I have also not included things which I wouldn’t have specced on the L&K (KESSY etc)

FWIW a loaded L&K is £36 ½K
