Is there a difference apart from the colour

What matters is not the color but the specification for your car. There are many greens but only one is the right one...

Red isn't the specification for your car for sure.

It doesn't matter, I have red ATF in mine and it's absolutely fine, it's a hydraulic pump and any mineral type hydraulic oil of the correct viscosity will work just fine, it sounds like the problem may be the rack although your battery does sound dodgy and should probably be replaced.

If the rack is OK, then there are two things that could be bad

- If the sensor G250 was bad you would still have PAS but it would be harder to move.

- If the pump was bad then you would only be able to move the steering with the two hands and moving the steering at low speeds or with the car stopped would be a nighmare! Like you would need to apply all your force to move it...

What visual check can I do for the rack as I have already changed the g250 sensor and is there any way to check the pump as the garage it was in I don't trust thm 1 bit as they had the car for 2 month and they didnt find any thing wrong so I decided to do sum detective work and found out the g250 sensor was faulty

If the steering is correctly power assisted at one end of its travel but not at the other, I would personally assume that it was a mechanical issue with the rack and I would want to get it changed before driving it much more.

One option which might help pin this down would be to temporarily remove the 40 amp fuse for the power steering - with mine I remember it as the third from the left on top of the battery. This will make the steering very heavy but I managed OK once the car was moving. If the steering is still more stiff turning in one direction than the other then it is not caused by the pump, battery, alternator or angle sensor since none being used to assist the steering - effectively disconnected.

That might also work with the front end jacked up. He might be able to feel any uneven stiffness in the rack by turning the wheel lock to lock.

My brother once worked for Alford & Alder in Hemel Hempstead who made steering racks for "British Leyland" in the 1970's.

They also reconditioned racks and one day a rack came in to be recon'ed with all the teeth chewed away at one point along the rack. He said it had probably missed the hardening process in its original manufacture.

Can you imagine driving a car when you can spin the wheel and nothing happens ?

When I jacked the car up to put the new sensor in I turned the steering wheel then a its was free as anything tht made me think tht I can't be the rack but even before I changed the sensor it always had a tiny bit of assist on left lock but I never checked if the lights flicker after I changed the sensor
