Reverse Switched Live

Featured Replies

Is there a fuse or feed that is a clean source of power anywhere in the car for a switched live when in reverse only?

I understand taping the reverse lights is not the best idea as it's part of the canbus and can interfere with whatever is connected.

What you you taping into it with / for?

I have done quite a few reverse sensor kits which tap directly into the reverse light build on octys with no issues. It's not a feed that has PWM, so as long as your not trying to pull another few amps off it you should have no issues.

Ideally it would be in the fuse box.

I am going to add a dashcam to the rear of the car, on a normal switched live circuit.

I want to double this up as a reversing cam.

I want to add a screen in the dash that has 2 power inputs via a 3 position switch that I can use to choose between the two:

Switched Live

Off

Reverse Live

The plan is that I can leave the switch mainly on the reverse live, so it comes on automatically when I go into reverse, and I can then see the feed from the rear camera.

If I want to manually look at it, I can flip the switch to switched live.

For my RVC I ran a switched live to the rear, from the fuse-box, which went to the RVC via a relay activated by the reverse light. Did the job perfectly :)

I used the live feed from the cigarette lighter in the boot hooked up to a relay with the reverse feed as a switch to activate the relay. No more fuzzy lines om camera, works a treat and easy to wire in.

I had exactly this issue for the reverse camera. Using the power from the reverse lights for the camera proved to be a dirty source, with lots of horizontal lines as interference on screen. I solved it by using the power and return lines to the near side boot courtesy light.

Don;t worry about this being "permanently" live. Yes it is live without the ignition on, but the power is cut by the central electronics module approx 10 minutes after the ignition is switched off. I have never once had any issues regarding any power drain of the battery using the boot light as a power source. Just be SURE that you don't use just the boot light positive and an earth point on the car -- that will not work. You need to use BOTH cables going to the boot light as power and return.

For a feed that is live purely when the car is in reverse, how about using the about coupled with a relay which switches from the reverse lights?

Mike

I use this set up too.

I've an estate :)

I might just get a rear dash cam in for now and then do the reversing screen at a later date
