Stop start disable

Featured Replies

I'm not a great believer in stop start. Too old school I guess....

Is their a quick and easy way to disable it if not permanently then at the start of each journey ?

On the Octy MK3 I believe it can be disabled by altering some coding with VCDS, thus fooling the ECU into believing the requirements have not been met for start/stop. IIRC it involved altering a temperature setting to something that could never be achieved. You may need to wait however for VCDS to catch up with the new Superb MK3 in order for coding to be possible on the newer modules.

It can be disable via VCDS. You need the newst version of Vag-Com (i think its 15.7), there is an option directly for Start/Stop to be disabled - you can choose several options one of them is malfunction, and the system stop working. I didnt see that option on Golf or Octavia. So yes its possible and we did it on our Superb. :)

Thanks guys. I'm not massively bothered about a permanent disable via vcds as long as it's easy to turn off for the journey. On our company Astras you simply press a button on the dash at the start of the journey. I can live with that.

Will it be that easy in the Superb ?

You have the button beside the gearbox and if you press the button it will stay deactive all the time when the car igniton is on. Or if you choose the mode drive on sport then i think the start and stop will also stay deactivate all the time. :)

I wonder if it's something you can select in a custom drive mode?

Thanks SuperB that's pretty much what I wanted to hear :-)

No problem :)

For start and stop, there isnt any option in car (not via vcds) to permanently disable function. Only the button which works like i wrote one post before. :)

For single journey deactivation...

As far as I can tell when being a pedestrian, most drivers must switch the  s/start system off as I rarely hear a car's engine go off , noticeable especially when walking alongside  slow moving traffic. I have as yet to experience this system in a car I have owned and would want to disengage it  as much as possible for 2 reasons. The excessive use and wear to the flywheel  ring gear and the extra burden on the battery, presumably reducing its life?.

I wish more people would use start stop. Its so annoying when people wait and leave the car idling, especially diesels.

I have it, and I love it. Easy to control (with Dsg at least), a firm press on brake stops the engine, and it starts when you let go. And a softer press on brakepedal doesnt trigger S/S.

That annoys me. See it a lot at supermarkets. I Park up, walk past a car with the engine running, half an hour later come out and it's still there with the engine running. Usually it's men, presumably waiting for their wives who are left to do the shopping.

I lived in Germany for three years in the 70's and if I remember correctly it was illegal to leave your engine running when stopped in say like a level crossing etc. From then I did learn to stop my engine when I knew the lights were going to take "time" to change, not talking every set of lights either.

I thought I would hate 'Stop / Start' when I got my Greenline just over 3 years ago but I think it's great, particularly as I'm now buying my own fuel after driving company cars for very many years.

I've gone from MPH to MPG.

Initially I had a problem because the diesel was so quiet I often didn't realise it had stopped and unsuccessfully tried to drive off without depressing the clutch pedal.

It now really annoys me when for one reason or another the system prevents Stop / Start from operating (which would include low battery voltage) I have to sit and watch the fuel consumption figure ticking downwards.

On the restart I don't often get beaten away from the lights although I'm not that bothered anyway..... I'll catch them when I coast in to the next set (annoying, isn't it :-) )

The engine fires up on the first turn every time and after 3 years I'm not aware of any battery issues although I don't think I've had one that was any use after 5 years anyway.

I stick a Lidl 'intelligent' charger on mine a couple of times a year and even if you decide to disable Stop / Start I would recommend getting one and plugging it in at both ends especially during the winter.

I would say if you haven't used Stop / Start - try it before you disable it.

I wholeheartedly agree.

Add "I don't like Start-Stop" to the list... "I don't like Adblue" and "I don't like electronic handbrakes".

Majority of dissenters appear to be those who haven't used and supporters those who have (mea culpa until I drove a Fabia III fitted with start-stop).

I'd say wait until you've experienced it in your particular species of Superb III (be it diesel/petrol, manual/dsg, 120PS or 280PS) before jumping to conclusions.

Just because you had it in a Ford/Vauxhall/BMW/Mercedes/whatever doesn't mean the experience will be the same - who knows, it could be better - or worse.

I think the other residents in my block of flats might not be best pleased with a 100 metre extension lead running to my car.

If it was a concern I'd sooner pay a bit extra and get a better Amp/Hr rated battery.

Unless your car sits unused for extended periods the need to use a charger on a modern car battery should not be a factor. If it is, you should get the battery and/or alternator tested.

Sadly, mine often does.
