Up until 18 months ago I owned a lovely Octy RS, it was my pride and joy, but family came in the way of it, and I ended up with a Citreon Picasso Diesel ! - What a friggin mistake that was !

The new octy will be very good , but thats an extra five grand on the cost of a Mk1 , and I'd rather have the money to spend on something else.

MK2 may be worth more but you would have paid more for it.

I would prop go for the MK2 myself, im kind of toying with the idea right now.

Ill be waiting a while for the ex demo models to become avalible and a lot depends on what they will give me for mine in part ex.

From the reviews IMHO the Mk1 is a better bet.

I personally prefer to wait for a year after a new car is launched (exception is a Fabia SDi - Fabia had been out a year and SDi was an established engine). However even that had a couple of gremlins - all sorted quickly.

That being said this is a run out car and may have been built with more care. I'd go for it if I had the cash.

Even if the new one has a slightly higher percentage residual value , you will lose a lot more on the new VRS than the older one.

Thanks for the advice. I suppose it's down to which car is likely to be better, and I can only suppose it will be the newer model, however the old vRS is a hard act to beat.

I had the same dilema,

the thing that swung it for me was the fact that it is to be a long term affair so deppreciation wouldnt be a consideration, not to mention the fact that although my 1.6 was a great car, i had always promised myself an RS and regretted not doing it right first time!

Up until yesterday I would have said wait for the new one but have you seen the the black 2004 mkI that just went up for sale on here. Really beautiful car. The MkI is great value and it sounds like a good deal but why not take the MkII Sport out for a test drive anyway and then imagine it with 1/3 more power. Also compare specs on the toys front. Skoda it would seem have been a bit mean with the standard spec of the new vRS.

I know when the radical bug-eye Impreza was launched late reg classic-shape Impreza's actually appreciated because they became more desirable than the new ones. Will wait with interest to see how the Octy II vRS is received!

It will be the same 168bhp engine as will be fitted in the new Passat.

No performance specs have been released yet.

I would go for it, the "Classic" Octy is a proven excellent car & if moneys tight anyway you know you will be getting an excellent affordable car for good money.

Who knows how good the new age Octy RS will be, Ive heard a lot of winges about build quality on the new Octys, lots of rattles & squeeks from the trim. Weve tried only one so far, an L&K and there were rattles everywhere, Im hoping that was just a bad one othetrwise it might not be a Skoda to replace our current L&K

It will be pricey though. Read an article lately in which they compared the Jetta 140bhp & 170(168)bhp versions. The 170 was slightly quicker to 60 but the difference between the 2 was almost unnoticeable at speed. The 170 was also a bit of a dog to drive as it is even more peaky than the 140. Personally in your shoes i'd go for the 140 elegance with sports suspension and uprated alloys. You would get lots more toys than the vRS and if you wanted to to swap out the grlle, front and rear bumpers at a later stage you can.

Also expect a drop of 10% economy in the vRS TDi. Not worth it IMO
