Rear 2/3 Seat Not Folding on Estate

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

Another day, another question / problem!

Since having the new sound system put in my car, I've just come to notice that the rear 2/3 seat no longer auto-folds when the handle is pulled in the boot. When I do pull the handle, the seat is unlatched from the hook but doesn't pop forward (I can lay it flat manually.) The 1/3 seat still works fine.

I'm off in to see my car audio dealer on Wednesday for something unrelated and obviously I'll give them the chance to fix it first but I wondered if it's a straight-forward thing to fix?

On the seat that does work, I've observed that the seat itself seems to be under a bit of tension when pushing it back into the upright 'locked' position. It's this tension that then flips the seat down when the handle is pulled. There's no tension on the other seat but it does latch and unlatch fine either when using the handle or the button on the seat itself.

My 2/3rd seat used to only go part the way down when I first got it. But seems to have sorted itself out. It's folded at least once a week. Depending who installed and what you had done, there maybe wires near the hinge section that weren't there before, causing rubbing.

At a complete guess the spring has come off part of the mechanism

Did they remove the seat when they run any wiring forward into the cabin? :)

Quite possibly as it was a complete install of front speakers, amp and sub. The sub is on the opposite side to the amp in the boot so it's very possible they had to faff around on the sub side to get the wiring in place which would include the removal of plastic trim around the seat release handle.

I'm wondering if it's just the wire tension that needs tightening as the handle on the side that doesn't work feels a bit more slack compared to the other. I don't know what causes the seat to pop forward though and if the mechanism is really that simple?

The boot release literally just opens the catch, same as if you pull the handle on the top of the seatback. The boot lever is just a remote means of doing it.

The seat back itself is spring loaded at the hinges...its this that causes the seat to fall forward. Some similar systems (like those on Vauxhall Astra Tourers) employ an electric actuator to force the seat forward...the Octavia system isnt that complex.

Theyve probably interfered with the spring loaded mechanism when fitting the sub wiring and no doubt easily corrected.
