Amundsen + System

Featured Replies

My Amundsen system has worked perfectly since i brought the car two years ago. The dealers supplied me with a special iPod cable and i fitted a lighting connector to it to be able to connect it to my iPhone 6. About 1 week ago the connection with the Aux channel in Media shows "no device connected"? I have tried refitting the cable and also my daughters IPhone 4 & 5 but with same result. I now no longer can charge my phone in the car using this connection or play the full music file on my phone.

The dealers have offered no solution other than bring it in and we will look at it !

I have poured through the internet but cannot find any possible reasons for this cable to suddenly fail.

Have any of you guys had similar problems? Any ideas?

Appreciate your advice.

2 years of the MDI actually working must be a record.

Most on here (me included) have struggled with cheap cables that don't work (especially those with built on lightning connectors) and switched to SD cards or bluetooth.

However if you PM chrisgreen (although he'll probably be along in a moment), he may be able to put you on to the best low cost cable/lightning combo.

Hello - I'm here!

The most reliable Lightning option for the MDI port in the Rapid is still the genuine BMW Lightning to USB + 3.5mm cable. However, it is not cheap. Direct from a BMW parts counter you will be looking at upwards of £80+ new. on eBay they seem to float around for about £50-55, though the occasional bargain does crop up (I got mine for about £30 IIRC).

The most reliable, cheaper option we've found is the combination of this cable: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SEAT-Ibiza-Leon-Altea-Altea-XL-and-Leon-CUP-USB-iPod-iPhone-iPad-Lead-Cable-/251078199427?ssPageName=ADME:L:OC:GB:3160 (cost - £6.49) combined with a GENUINE Apple dock connector to Lightning adapter http://www.apple.com/uk/shop/product/MD823ZM/A/lightning-to-30-pin-adapter?fnode=da4a9f08386fb67dc5b61658339e293ff6e9e7eccf01faf854402cef259f501dd18790837abbdd6818edaa5f633cd2c48fe66c73fc378fb9d50c6e86681cd2e4fe55d31c859dcfa13180f878a57e56d7908dc2884351b9cc7c0dc2d98bf4b283 (Cost - £25).

Both of these have been proven to work well. Also, be aware of the connection order. Connect the MDI cable to the car before connecting it to your phone. Do not start the car with cable and phone already connected to the MDI port. The MDI initialisation will fail otherwise.

Just use Bluetooth:)

Not worth faffing with cables when BT is available.

I do recall that my phone charged even though there was no valid data connection - does that sound right?

In that case I can use USB to charge and BT for streaming.

I believe that is right if only just using usb. Maybe Chris can clarify this as he's played around with a few.

If you connect your iPhone/iPod/iPad to the Rapid's MDI port with just a USB to Lightning cable, it won't charge properly. What normally happens is that the MDI gets stuck in a loop of trying to initialise, failing, resetting itself and trying again. That resetting process turns the USB port off and then in again, so the phone will constantly be charging, then not charging, then charging again, like you were sitting there turning the mains off and on again every 30 seconds or so.

It's really bad for your iOS device, and doesn't do the MDI interface any good. If you want to just charge your phone while using Bluetooth for streaming, I highly recommend the AmazonBasics 12v Lightning Charger. It is a proper Lightning connector licensed from Apple, so will work reliably and it's very cheap at £10.99: http://www.amazon.co.uk/AmazonBasics-Lightning-Charger-iPhone-Apple-certified/dp/B00HFEJM62/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1440020110&sr=8-6&keywords=Amazonbasics+Lightning+charger

The Griffin PowerJolt is also an exceptionally good 12v accessory socket Lightning charger (also Apple certified like the Amazon one). Amazon has a customer return unit available for £11.33: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/offer-listing/B009I2UH2W/ref=olp_prime_all?ie=UTF8&shipPromoFilter=1

It has a slightly longer cable than the Amazon. Both are 2.1 Amp, both very well made. You will be happy with either.

If using the cable you have Chris is the charging stable as it incorporates the 3.5 jack as well?

If you use either of the Y cables I mentioned (and allow MDI to initialise correctly), or either of the accessory socket charger leads, charging will be stable.

Are you using a genuine dock connector-to-lightning adapter, or a cheaper knock-off one? It sounds to me like you are not using a genuine widget.
