Oil change with 3 liters instead of 2.8

Featured Replies

Hi everyone, i am new in this forum, so hope ï'm writing in the right section.

During the last oil & oil filter change of my fabia II 1.2 HTP, the mechanic (not an official skoda agent) put 3 liters of oil instead of 2.8 as described in the user guide. As a result, the oil level exceeds the maximum by around 7mm.

The mechanic says it's ok and there's no problem. Do you think he is right?

Thanks

Only a guess but it's probably max for a reason. I'd probably just let a small amount out and then check the oil level. Keep repeating until you're at max.

No its not all right. Check the dipstick carefully, with the car on level ground (important), warm, but not hot, engine, 10 mins after its been switched off. If the level is above the top fold which is above the hatched area, you should have some oil removed. Above this level, the crank counterweights can hit and churn the oil, aerating it and that can lead to a possibility of dramatic pressure loss and sudden lack of lubrication flow as oil pumps cannot pump aerated oil. Ideally the level should not be above the hatched area.

Is it worth the risk?

My gut feeling is that 7mm above max would equate to a lot more than 200ml of oil too.  You'll soon find out, by how much you have to drain out to get it to the right level.

The difference between top and bottom of the hatched area is one litre, so 7mm is probably 250ml possibily a bit more. It depends how well he drained the old oil out, whether he was in a hurry.

Its easy to drop a bit of oil, if somewhat messy. Wear gloves and take care not to drop the sump plug, easily done, then youll end up dropping a couple of litres! Been there, done that!

The 1.2l 44kw engine that requires 2.8 litres is the one engine the Fabia Owners Manual says should be checked cold,

?

Is this the Engine being asked about in this thread.?

Yes you are probably right, but I personally dont like checking after an overnight stand in case oil has drained down from the filter etc which is apt to happen on our 1.2 tsi engines,( leaking drain down valve on the filter housing) giving a false too high reading (as well as some chain rattle on start up)

But this is not about a 1.2TSI or checking overnight, it is the usual Servicing and Oil & Filter Change and a Technician or Fitter not overfilling,

and then the Owner being able to know where the correct level should be and was before the change.

7mm higher than 'Max' means nothing, because higher than what MAX mark,

which type of dip stick is it, is it a Cold Check or a 'Warm / Hot' Check being done.

Putting .2 litres extra in with a engine with a 3.6. 3.9 or 4.2 litre capacity is not critical,  .2 litres extra in a 2.8 litre capacity should have the Garage Responsible Draining the Oil and see just how much was filled,

because an Invoiced Amount counts for nothing.

& see that the correct oil was used as well.

Tell/ask mechanic involved to suck-out excess engine-oil through dipstick pipe..to bring back down to correct level..

Too much oil is just as bad as too little, hence markings on dipstick..

Thank you guys for your quick feedbackas, really appreciated  .

I was pretty sure to get completelly different answers here from actual Fabia owners/specialists, compared to the technician and those close to me who have a lot of preconceived ideas
Now, unfortunatlly my car has been driven arround 200km since the oil change and I do not know if any dammage occured...hope it's not too late  What could you advise me to check ??

No, it's a 51kw engine.

It's a warm check and here is the type of dip stick and oil level mark

Thanks again

Have you not dropped the oil yet and seen how much is in, or have the place that put the oil in drop it.?

Are you just driving around with too much oil in?

Where are you from serval?

Serval, just tell the garage that did the oil change that its overfilled and youve taken advice that it should be reduced to the correct level - area A or top of B.

Its their responsibility to do the job properly and should drop the quarter litre at no charge.

Dont fret about damage, its unlikely, but still an increased risk over the correct level.
