Dash Cam Thoughts?

Featured Replies

Just been browsing the Techmoan site and saw his review for the Mini 0806 Dashcam. This is the 3rd Gen model which apparently fixes the issues the other versions were having. Could certainly consider 2 of these.

Certainly looks like the previous issues have been resolved and I like the idea of the polarising filter. I am leaning towards the KIS and the Mobius currently.

After reading on DashCamTalk about overheating with the K1S and that you can't fit a capacitor battery I was thinking of just going with 2 x Mobius. However, there seems to be a new contender for the Mobious which is due for imminent release - the JooVuu X.

Hopefully by the time I need dashcams these will be available and had some reviews.

Looks good but the quality of the sample video didn't look that great (

). Quality from the mobius looks a lot better:

Not sure of relationship but there are 2 sites www.joovuu.com selling Mobius and now www.joovuu-x.com. Have they developed their own version I wonder?

Yes that's correct. They sell dashcams (including K1S and Mobius) and are now about to release their own 'JooVuu X'.

From the sounds of it there will be plenty of early adopters so I'll wait for the reviews to make up my mind. The price on the JooVuu X website is listed as £126.99

@Techno79 - I also thought the footage didn't look great but until some raw samples are available I don't think there's much merit in comparing uploads on YouTube because YouTube adds it's own compression.

Fair enough but I was comparing against a mobius YouTube samples and there is a vast difference. Also, the Joovuu sample video is what they actually have on their website (https://www.joovuu-x.com/footage/). I'd assume the YouTube video would be fairly representative of the raw video otherwise they'd be shooting themselves in the foot.

Fair point :) As I said I'll be awaiting user reviews. I've got at least 3 months before delivery of the car to settle on a choice. It's a shame there's a lot of products nearly hitting the mark and always some point lets it down. There's been talk of a new Street Guardian product that will be dual channel which would be nice to see materialise before I need to buy. Then again, I'm not going to get caught chasing the latest and greatest - I'd end up never buying :D

Many thanks l4wrence for clarification. Fully agree with yourself about weakness in every model. Beginning to think there will need to be a compromise somewhere but meanwhile like you have not got car yet so will wait for further reviews.  :)

How much?!?!

  • 2 weeks later...

I use a Roadhawk HD in the car. Image quality is very good. It's neither cheap, nor a small unit, and giving a large mirror unit in my other car made it a little harder to install.

I have had reliability issues which (for now at least) have been resolved under warranty. The return of cold weather may yet trip the unit up again so we'll see. I have it on a hard-wired, switched 12V feed and use a power smoother to make sure the unit starts and stops smoothly.

The advice I would offer anyone looking is to not just look at the frame rate and resolution but also the recording data rate, and also the card you choose. Go for the highest rate (in my case I use 12Mbps) you can. 1080p/30fps @ 4Mbps is far lower quality than that at higher bit rates. Make sure your memory card choice allows for the continuous bit rate you choose and plenty of overhead, I use Sandisk Class 10 with a 30MB/s continuous write rate. Cheap memory cards are not worth the effort.

Change the card annually regardless. Reformat it monthly.

What dash am can anyone recommend for me?

I have a Naito V2 GPS 32GB, in my Superb, and can say that so far, I have had no problems with it, and find the quality of recording to be excellent, both day and night.  It cost me just under £100, form dashcams.co.uk.

NormanHall its worth checking out this site.....

I am also looking for a 2 channel (front and rear cameras) kit, my shortlist so far is between these two:

Koonlung K1S - mainly for it’s ultra compact size (something to bear in mind if fitting to a S3 or O3 due to the huge rear view mirror housing that houses the lane departure etc camera)

463721952-johann-von-buehlow-attends-the

and the Thinkware F750 I do prefer this over the K1S as it doesn’t have the separate screen (which I would hide behind the dash) BUT the front camera is a lot bigger.

I am still awaiting car so no decision yet but I think I am favouring one that sits best low down on the dash to avoid the mirror housing and camera etc. Also awaiting feedback from the early S3 owners.

Resurrecting an old thread here - has anyone bought the K1S, or indeed another one, and what are their thoughts having used it for a while?

Never had a dash cam before but seriously considering investing given how often someone does something stupid on the road around me, and also at least one insurance issue that would've been better resolved if I'd have had footage of the incident!

Very keen on these being as unobtrusive as possible which is why the K1S appeals to me.

I have the heated screen in mine which stops the camera receiving a good enough GPS signal for a reliable lock. There are two 'windows' either side of the rear-view mirror that do provide good GPS signals. Higher fitting also gives a line of sight equivalent to the driver's eyeline - which may be more useful.

I don't know how bothered I am about the GPS, I'm not sure how much value I'd find in it? Besides I was thinking this would hopefully fit behind the rear view mirror anyway so it's mostly out of sight all the time.

What are your thoughts overall on the system?

GPS will give your exact position, direction of travel, time and speed at the incident point and for the run up to it. It can be extremely useful in the event of any kind of claim or as supporting evidence. Without that data you lose what might be critical options. Police friends of mine tell me it's just video and of limited use without the GPS data embedded as well. Of course it can work against you as well.

I'm not bothered about 'discrete' as my car has warnings the system is there. The K1S seems to have lots of bits you need to find homes for. One interesting comment I read concerns the front-rear wire length not being long enough and Koolung wanting £40 plus import duty for the longer version. It doesn't say what vehicle it was in though - not particularly useful if the reviewer!

If it comes to police using dash cam footage it doesn't matter if there is GPS info or not, they will still be able to work out the camera car speed using road markings / street furniture and distance calculations.

They quite probably can. I can only comment on what I get told as part of Speedwatch. I guess GPS just makes it easier for them?

I've got a Mini 0803 dash cam at present in my XC60 (will be fitted in the Superb when delivered), only problem I've had is a faulty microSD card which would stop camera recording when it was full.

I bought a Nextbase 402G, with the intention of fitting it in the Skoda, but the first one failed after 2 weeks (wouldn't switch on) and the replacement lasted 2 days !!! (battery failure as it was getting very hot after 10mins)

Always installed with hardwire kit, can be bought for a few quid on Amazon.

Thanks for the info. The reason I want discreet is because I don't want to see it myself when I'm in the car!

I've mixed thoughts on the GPS. I want something that will record the events of what happened. Some years ago I had a real nightmare insurance claim when someone denied going into the back of me and it was going to end up going to court. He claimed he wasn't even where it happened and that I'd taken his Reg plate at random, pretty much. If I'd had a recording of it, it's unlikely it would've ever gotten that far! And then a few years ago I ended up going into the back of someone else (who narrowly missed hitting the person in front of him). It was caused by someone coming the other way swerving into the oncoming lane (my lane) because they were on their phone. The person I went into tried to back me up but the insurers said without evidence - didn't even have a Reg plate as the idiot kept on driving - there was nothing I could do. So I had to take the blame and have a driver at fault claim on my record (and still do until December). If I'd had video footage I'd have had the evidence and hopefully the numpty's plate too.
