Columbus and battery drain

Featured Replies

Hi, just installed columbus unit in 2007 octavia vrs and all good so far. Got a loan of a vcds and managed to get maxidot display working as well ( even though I have to turn off columbus to get back to mfd menu).

I did a check on vcds to see my can bus gateway

1k0 907 530 K, I think this is it

I gather it's too old and the battery will inevitably drain but I came across the firmware 4020 for European units on www.rnsfirmware.com.

It says it's recoded to prevent battery drain.

Would this void the need to change gateway?

Columbus is 3t0 035 680 A.

I understand the maps will have to be reinstalled

Thansk in advance.

If the Columbus part number you quote is the original part number, i.e. on the sticker, it's a slightly newer unit than the older ones that the firmware you found is adjusted for. It might work but if it were me I would upgrade the gateway and avoid issues with a firmware that is likely incompatible with the unit.

Thanks i might just take it out until I get a new gateway, I might see can I get one from a scrapyard.

Would I be right in saying anything 08 and above shoukd suffice

Strange though, it doesn't seem to be draining the battery, I ran a meter across battery and got 12.9 an hour later it was 12.95. Also I tried to hear it running when I opened the door of the car. But it seemed to be off and I could hear fans starting a few seconds later

The gateways can be had cheaply but it's the coding that they need that is a bit of a pain unless you have vcds?

Battery drain is I believe in k or below gateways on newer firmwares. Your firmware might be old enough not to cause it but that would mean 5 digit postcode searching only?

I have a loan of a vcds, is it a major job to code the gateway?

Thansk again for advice

Also, postcodes don't matter in Ireland ha ha

Ah ok. Not tricky to code - just take a copy of the coding before removing the old and use that on the new. Ideally do a full scan of the car in case anything else does wrong. Note the gateways tend to be coded as ticking an installation list.

Ok, so basically duplicate the coding on the old one onto the new one, and that has to be above a K

I'll do a bit more research any way

Thanks

Yes exactly that.

cant seem to find one .  where is the best place to get hold of  a new gateway ?  are ebay ones safe enough or are they chinese rubbish ?

With regards to you having to switch the Columbus off to get back to the MFD etc.

This is a well known problem. You need to install a fix onto the Columbus from here;

http://www.my-gti.com/3374/volkswagen-rns-510-firmware-upgrade-and-information

It's under "Fixes" and under Skoda Columbus (RNS 510) Fix

Cars MY08 and newer got a newer can gateway. Either ebay from a car being broken or there are plenty of new and used ones on ebay.

Not quite: check what is installed, not the coding. Apparently sometimes the listing between revisions can be different, so make a note of what's installed as well as the coding.

Some K versions are ok, there are 4 different versions of K

ah the plot thickens ,.. I couldn't physically find my gateway behind the glovebox so it might be above the pedals .

When i checked with vag com the number i got was  1k0 907 530 K , do u think this would be a version i could stick with .

I was checking the car battery intermittently with a meter and it didn't seem to be dropping and as i said earlier after opening the car door i tried to listen to see is it running ,

It seemed to make noises a few seconds after which would make me think it wasn't on all the time and just preps itself for startup.

Thanks everyone for advice ,  this gateway thing is making my head hurt .

I have tried googling this and cant make head nor tail of it and i'm starting to see model nos , revisions and gateway numbers in my sleep at this stage .

The columbus i have is 3t0 035 680 A  HW: 52  SW: 2844 .

Was wondering what the max size sd card this can take? don't want to buy a big one and find it wont work.

Phil , with regard to the fix , Do you just unzip rar file to sd card or cd and stick it in columbus ??

You should have 32gb SD card compatibility with your firmware. However, even if you didn't a 32gb class 10 card can be had for less than a tenner anyway.

As regards the fix, unzip the file you downloaded and you'll have a .iso file. Use IMGburn to burn the file to cd or dvd. Turn the Columbus on in the car (keep the ignition turned off and the keys out of the ignition) insert the disc into the unit and follow the instructions.

According to Ross Tech, your CAN Gateway is compatible only if it is software version 0178.

Software version 0170 can be updated (good luck with getting a dealer to do that...) and version 0021 is not compatible.

If it is not one of these, then you should be in luck.

Ha ha, it's 0021 "replacement only" according to the Ross tech link typical..

Will have to start looking for new one.

And will just pick up a 32gb card so.

Thanks again all.

Last question, I promise.

Am browsing the classifieds forscrapped octavias after 2008 but having no luck.

Will a gatwway out of any Vw or skoda after 2008 do,

Example Vw touran 2008

Should do. First three characters will be different, but the next six and suffix should be the same.

Check Ross Tech Wiki for compatibility list.

You have to laugh, I rang breakers yard with 08 Vw touran and asked has he got Canbus gateway. He asked what the hell was that, I explained what it is and where it is.

He said no problem it'll be 150 euro thank you.

I got quoted three times more than the dealer price for a used part earlier this year!

Makes me wonder what cloud some of these online breakers (eBay) have their heads in...

I'll look at the CAN part numbers later for you.
