Automatic transmission intermittent fault

Featured Replies

My faithful Octavia Ambiente Estate has been very grateful for the help offered here on previous occasions - blown brake light bulbs setting off a dashboard warning of fuel pump problems, and water getting into the boot space and causing the door locks to misbehave.

But now she needs your help again.  Occasionally, she is reluctant to go backwards - selecting reverse gear fails to engage the drive, until several attempts have been made.  And just today, she wouldn't change up into 4th gear when cruising at up to 50 mph.

Thankfully (or annoyingly, depending on your point of view) both faults are intermittent.

Can anyone out there suggest a course of action to fix this?  Octavia has 145,000 miles under her tyres, so she is well beyond tantrum age!

Try changing the transmission fluid, it might be that simple?

First check before you do anything else is to make sure the transmission oil level is correct and that you have no big leaks on the box.

Once you do this and it is verified as correct, we can go further.

When was the last transmission oil and filter change carried out if ever?.

Sorry simspj posts crossed while writing.

Thank you (both) for your helpful comments.

I have to confess, I don't know whether the transmission oil has been checked at all while I have had the car.

My local garage looks after routine servicing, and I will ask them to renew the oil and filter unless they assure me it was done very recently.

I will let you know the outcome!

My thanks again, simspj and kentphil1.  My local garage changed the filter and replenished the transmission oil. There have been no repeat problems since then.

Octavia rolls again!
