VRS visual difference

Featured Replies

Are there any visual differences between the diesel and petrol variants in the current models or do they both look exactly the same?

Tia

I think that if you look through the exhaust tips on the petrol vRS (both sides) it has the exhaust pipes behind both tips either side, I think the diesel only has 1 exhaust pipe even thou it has 2 tips.

Also the Rev counter in-terms of 6k diesel & 8k petrol, other than that & the exhausts, I think visually they look the same, maybe brake disc's size? not to sure on that one thou, I could be wrong but if your looking to purchase a new vRS mk3 then I suggest go for a test drive in both versions & see which you actually like! Also for what reasons would you want a petrol or a diesel? weigh up what suits you the best & hopefully that might help you to choose, just as long as this thread is not turned into a petrol v diesel case  :D mpg remap, I'm faster etc because these are not visual

Don't overthink these things :) I have a petrol and just wondered.

My MKIII Diesel Vrs has 2 pipes at the rear

And also the ones you just see the back end of :)

You definitely should have overthought that comment, standby for threads on remaps, real world driving and safe driving advice......

One pipe at each side, or twin pipes at the left? The latter is what he meant.

Well we'll find out if they post again.

You must be extremely special then, as the diesel has one yes one exhaust, but has the same rear valance as the TSI. both rear valances have an opening at each corner as such only the TSI has an exhaust to fill both these openings.

The TSI exhaust mid-section splits into a Y which leads to two unequal sized backboxes. Exit pipes from these backboxes are left and right sides. Smoke billows from both sides on a cold wet day.

The TDI mid-section leads to a single backbox which exits on the rear left.

The TSI doesn't really need two exits. It seems they are there more to improve the audio than for performance. The two different sized backboxes provide a slightly uneven burble under hard acceleration.

Could have fooled me. Only sound I get from my tsi is the slight whoosh from the waste gate recirculating when I change gear. Must sound better from outside? ;-)

The only sound I get from the TDI Version is what the soundgen supplies me, and thank science that it's louder than that tractor-engine noise from under the bonnet, though on the outside it's probably the other way around.

Even though there are enough sporty diesels to be had, I doubt if any of them sound the part (and I'm referring to their real sound, not some soundbox stuffed in the muffler).

Though I haven't checked for myself (can't be bothered) I'm inclined to suspect the TDI might have bigger/thicker front discs due to the need to stop a higher curb weight than the TSI.

Our TDi TT had a cat back (resonated) Scorpion stainless exhaust fitted... and it certainly sounded sporty

They have exactly the same brakes as far as I'm aware. The TSI is also quite a bit quicker so would warrent better brakes

Absolutely no difference bar the TDI having a fake exhaust exit (as TDIs and TSI's have different exhaust layouts...exactly the same for the Golf GTI and GTD) and the rev counter of course.

Same brakes ans everything else.

Not sure we're that comes from. My MkII had a great burble, for the first few times I pulled up on the drive, I thought the exhaust was blowing. Even SWMBO has noticed that the MkIII has no noise. She always heard me reversing onto the drive in the old one, she can't hear the new one.

Get your wife to drive past at 5-6k rpm, or disable the sound generator (like me) and open the rear windows. It's not a great sound but the unequal sized exhausts definitely alter the in-line 4 sound. It is no Subaru, but slightly better than a Focus.

Same for us, in that my '07 Octy vRS TFSi was much louder than SWMBO's '11 vRS TSi, her car is almost civilized.............

(I thought my EOS exhaust was quiet was quiet (especially inside the car) but she backed it off the drive last night & it sounded quite sporty.)

As for the Superb, the twin-pipe / quad tips set-up must be for looks, it's pretty quiet inside or out!

Brilliant, what gear should she be in? I reckon that's about 80mph in third...

or 25mph within 1st, or just listen to a GTI 7 on YouTube as they have a very similar setup.
