Car decisions.... (and a flurry of questions).

Featured Replies

Great I think I'm good with the extras now. I would like the panoramic roof, but £700...ouch!!

We have 2 cars, one has a panoramic roof, curse getting the other car without one, is now a must for me

But I guess if you've never had, you might not miss it.

Could you drop something else, (or haggle harder).

Cornering fogs wasteful if you don't live somewhere without streetlights

front parking sensors, its not a big car that needs to be squeezed into small spaces, so these are extravagant

My own thoughts are the TSI is better value than a euro6 diesel (which a lot of people forecast could have massive repair bills to the emissions equipment in years 5 or 6), unless you do massive distances,  its your choice, but remember that a diesel that is pushed when first started (before its warmed up) wont give anywhere near the official mpg, so petrol is better for lots of short trips.

If going diesel you seriously need to consider the DPF, which needs at least a 25 minute journey (probably nearer 35 or 40 minutes in cold weather) on a regular basis, or you will get problems.

  • That engine is so quiet that you can hardly hear it revving. Id change gear at much higher revs if I wasnt told to But that motor works like the rubber-band motors on the model planes of my childhoo

  • It's certainly worth it, but I'm waiting for 3 months now and I'm dying inside :'(

  • Well guys, it's over. Thank you for all your help. I've just bought a Fabia 1.2 TSI (90 ps), SE L, with pretty much every extra (bar a few big ones like panoramic roof), and the dealer gave me 8.9% of

I've had a Pug 207 SW with a panoramic roof and whilst it was airy I don't miss it and I'm on to my 3rd car without one since and that's after having a Monte with black interior and headlining. You'll find there's slightly more wind noise as the glass roofs don't insulate from noise as much a solid roof with a cushioned headlining.

My wife has recently swapped her Fiat 500 Lounge with the glass roof to the 500 S which has the black sports interior and she's never mentioned the fact she doesn't have a glass roof now.

It's horses for courses some like them, some don't, me, I'm not bothered either way, if it's standard then fine but I wouldn't spec it as a cost option.

I can't recommend the 1.2 TSI engine enough, I've had the 105 and now I have the 110 after over 10 years of diesels, they're much smoother, quieter and free revving compared to a diesel, especially the 3 pot 1.4 they're fitting in the Fabia now.

Right I think you've both written diesel of for me. The 1.2 TSI 110 PS it is!!! I've decided to 'Carwow' my way through this and I've a dealer t'up north who will offer 8.4% off the OTR price! So I'm not sure I can haggle much more out of them but, I've crossed off,

- Panoramic roof

- Driver fatigue sensors
- Front parking sensors
- Voice control

I'm getting there :)

Awesome, so 'the_raz', what's your average mpg like in the 110? Is it worth going for a diesel (that question's open to anyone)! And 'bluecar', thanks for the 'extras' run down, I will take heed of all of your pointers.

I've done the carwow thing a few times now, so I'm going to try my best at a good blag (haha). Oni, did you get that 9% knockdown on finance or cash price because I'm going to be using PCP.

Okay I'm nearly done with questions:

I'm going to get the SE-L, are any of the extra gadgets any good/worth having (I won't ask about obvsious ones like front/rear electric windows!) I realise many of them are personal taste too.

- Cornering fogs

- Hillhold

- Driver fatigue sensors

- Front parking sensors

- KESSY entry (this freaks me out a bit but seems so cool)

- Light/rain assistant

- Voice control? (This confuses me because I thought it comes with Android Auto, and therefore Google Now....so do I need this option?)

- Smartgate

- Is it worth having a rear spare tyre, or are the repair kits effective?

Thanks again all! J

personally  I don't think any of the features of the SE L are worth the price

personally I do not like keyless entry and starting I think it a security risk no physical key to turn to start the car, just a transponder somewhere in the car (but that is my personal view)

diesel (add £2000) ? I have gone back to petrol after driving diesels since 1987 , premium for a diesel engine, difference in real world mpg between petrol and diesels no longer covers the premium of a diesel and all the additional sensors and DPF etc

spare wheel every time, over a can of goo which is no use for anything other than a pin *****

when I looked at the fabia 3 I looked at the SE as the S didn't have much kit

but at the end of the day its your choice

Haha, I hear you on the spare wheel. It's definitely worth that extra bit of weight! Personally, I'm cool with the whole keyless thing security wise, and I guess if it goes t*ts up then it's all under warranty. (Watch me eat my words though hahah)!

Mine came with the spare wheel without me even speccing it which was a nice surprise. I must admit, a spare wheel would be the only thing I'd spec on a car, my last Fabia was the first car I had that didn't have one and I'm just glad I never got a puncture. Even my wife's Fiat 500 has a spare wheel as standard and that's a little city car!!!

<snip>

I would say about 43 MPG with my current driving profile, but that is mostly short city runs 1-8 miles per time. Any longer trip, and the consumption is more like 53-55 mpg. With this engine I don't miss a diesel one bit.

The_raz do you got led backlight on your fabia? Don't think I have that on my car, or even the option to buy it.

I do not have LED backlight on my car. What is visible in the pic (if that is what you mean) are actually the reflectors - my phone decided it needed flash for that image       :D

I have replaced the reversing lights with LEDs (and with help found here on the forum been able to get rid of error messages) and am thinking about replacing the bulbs with LED bulbs as well. On this car, you can actually set the bulb load to LED to avoid any error messages because the resistance is too low.

I've got a 110 as well and on my motorway commute I get a respectable 52 MPG average for the trip, which includes the heavy stop start traffic for the Forth Road bridge. I'm told this figure will go up once the engine has broken in but I'm not sure when this will be as I'm now on 3k miles.

Definitely the TSI, I found the 90 was nippy when I test drove it but the dealer only had the 110 in stock. Can't complain one bit and the 6th gear really helps to keep the car smooth and quiet on a motorway run!

2 Days old, with a massive 48 miles on the clock! I'm currently getting 47mpg since leaving the dealer and it climbs everytime I get in the car.

I've done about 50/50 town/dual carriage way miles so far and I wouldn't say I've been particularly conservative.

Our Roomster (TSI 105) went from 37ish mpg when new and now does 44/45mpg after 3000 miles on the exact same trips.

So if this newer engine is comparable, I expect low to mid 50's after a couple of k's for my useage.

Oh, and running the air-con drops the average mpg by about 2mpg on the Roomster!

Not exactly sure how the climate control is on the SE L, but I think it's basically on all the time if you have the fans on?

My VW Passat had an ECO mode which balanced the outside air when cooler/warmer to save on the Aircon usage. Not sure the climate on the Fabia has the same option.

Great stuff....110 it is then (unless there's no stock anywhere). My dealer seems to think I'll need a factory order if I want Android Auto....great, 3 month wait!

Personally - the wait is worth it to get the car you want!

True, it just means I have to keep my current Fabia alive that extra bit longer...then sell it! Argh.

Blimey the dealers are pushy. I had a call today from the manager confirming my test drive on Saturday. Then he said he'd heard about my flirtations carwow so we'd discuss that too...and after the test drive, he said he assumed I'd then be happy to put down the deposit! PRESSURE! I hate it. (Vent over, sorry!)

Just tell him no, youll do what you like, in your own time and being pushy wont get him anywhere.

I just tell em how it is :D

I would look at this differently. If he's that pushy, it probably means their sales are down, which could mean you have the upper hand..

As a consumer I personally hate this laid back sales approach. Some dont pull it off well and you dont know where you stand and are left confused.

sounds like they are desperate for sales, so yes you could have the upper hand, especially as they are rolling out the "sales manager" at such an early stage

can also mention you have to test drive an i20 after and all the extras it has :) (don't have to actually do it, but they don't need to know that : ) )

Saved me over £1500 from my previous quote, still got 0% Apr, a year of free insurance, and £500 dealer contribution! I'll post photos when it arrives late October. Sadly it was a factory build, but I can wait... It's like an early Christmas present!

good to see you got a good deal,

enjoy it when it arrive

Thank you! I did check out the i20 again but after trying out Android Auto - I was hook line and sinker! :)

Quick question: I've changed to the 110 PS engine. I've noticed it has 6 years...er why? And when does one use them? Motorways only I'm guessing?

Whenever you need it.

The same way you know when to use 5th in a 5 speed box.

Itll drop the revs abit.

Just because its got a 6th it doesnt mean its much higher than a 5th would be in a 5speed. The ratios could be closer together

Thank you! I did check out the i20 again but after trying out Android Auto - I was hook line and sinker! :)

I have a windows phone and don't like android or apple, so easier decision as none of the toys will work with my phone

I did personally think the build quality, materials and spaciousness where not what I had come to know from my fabia GLII and previous skoda vehicles
