Chrome end exhaust pipes

Featured Replies

Hi

Having just bought a 2011 Octavia VRS that is in excellent condition, what lets it down a little is that the chrome on the ends of the twin exhaust pipes is rather faded. Can you get these Skoda chrome ends new on their own and do the old ones just pull of, probably with a great deal of effort.

Give them a good polish with autosol metal polish. Mine usually come up a treat.

Already given it a good rub with the product you describe. The only chrome left is hidden underneath the car out of sight. The ends are now the colour of dull aluminium. They are looking clean but no longer shiny.

Have you tried autosol with 00 grade steel wool ?

The chrome has completely gone. I could I suppose use wire wool, some of which I do have somewhere, just to shine up the metal. Will have to look to see how to get the old end pipes off. If welded, may need the grinder. I do like a shiny chrome end and the only way of getting that is to put new ends on there.

You'd probably need a new back box section for that

As above. Skoda do similar twin chrome tips as an accessory for a number of models and they bolt over the existing tail pipes. However I can't see how they would work with the vRS as there's nothing for them to bolt over. It probably does require new back box.

Don't want to go as far as a new back box to get my shine. Will have to get under the car and have a good look. Might be able to get those ends off and even buy the right size chrome ones from a motorists shop.

Surprised the chrome has come off. Ours is a 2010 and the chrome is fine. Let us know how you get replacing the ends. Will be of interest.

I think the previous owner over cleaned them with a rough compound cleaner. By the look of the rest of the car, he certainly cleaned every small crevice. The car looked like it had been detailed for a show when I picked it up the other day. Mind you, I am not complaining, just got to keep it looking as good myself. Going to have another go this morning at cleaning them with wire wool and Autosol first.

Thanks everybody for advice given, especially vRSRobT. I do feel a fool. When vRSRobT reminded me about wire wool, I gave it a try with Autosol. What looked like chrome missing and bare metal, was in fact a paint the previous owner had sprayed onto the ends. Maybe he did not like chrome look! The Autosol on it's own did not have any effect, but with that and a good hard rub with wire wool, I have my chrome back. Although the chrome on the very end of the pipes is starting to go, generally the rest of the chrome is looking okay.

Glad you got it sorted. Autosol works every time with or without wire wool.

No problem glad you got it sorted. Sometimes its a little things that can make the difference :)
