Nissan Sunny GTi-R

Featured Replies

Don't know if the Sunny GTI-R is a real car, or just a figment of the owner's imagination, but there's a white Nissan Sunny near where I work with a big grill in the bonnet (for a top-mount IC?), an exhaust the size of a drainpipe, and a rear wing that would put an RS Cosworth to shame. But for all the 'questionable' fixtures and fittings, it ain't half fast!!! So much so, I half reckon it's got nitrous or something!

Anyone else seen one of these???

they indeed are a very real and very fast car!

sort of a baby skyline...

google search for it and you will see

They exist and they are very fast. 4wd 2l turbo. Around 225bhp standard, around 300bhp with a remap and easily tuned to alot more.

A mate at college had one of these. They came standard on 14" wheels eek.gif and had slightly dodgy brakes, and looked like ****. But drifted like demon, and was fast !

My dentist has had one for ages - ridiculously wing but very nice & quick car. Dentist also has a Skyline ... methinks we are paying him too much :P

Yes, they're quick & can be modded to be exceptionally quick.

A mate has one modded to 380bhp & it's f**kin quick!

I suggested it for the cool wall months back but no response. Started feeling old cos I thought no one knew what I was talking about. You can pick up a 1/2 descent one for under

Once saw one drag race a Dodge viper on TV. The viper lost.

My E30 M3 was insurance group 20. It was only

That'll be one of these then.

Unassuming isn't it!

They're even more unassuming at night.

I think they were sold in some markets as a Pulsar.

Where they RWD? Can't remember. FWD would be a real handful

they were all 4 wheel drive

they were called the pulsar in japan

and the sunny gtir in the uk only 75 were genuine british cars

the japanese ones came with an umbrella in the door

their nickname is godzilla jnr

the stoppers are almost useless and the gear mechanism is made from coat hangers iirc

Actually 174 British cars and it was the UK ones that had the umbrella. UK cars also have green tinted glass and Jap cars have bronze. Most people call them all Pulsars due to the limited number of UK cars and the fact that no1 wants to admit to owning a sunny!

That's pretty impressive! Did you manage to get it on a 'classic car' policy or something? Or did you say you lived on Lundy?!! ;)

Nah - it was 12k / annum with Tesco i think ? Kept in the garage, Cat 2 immobiliser only ? That was with my 21 year old wife [girlfriend then] on the policy.

Actually it's the Jap import Pulsars that have the umbrella stored in the drivers door shut in a tube that goes into the section under the rear side window with a little flap to hide it, I know cos I had a Pulsar for a couple of years. UK versions did not have the umbrella store and actually had blue tinted glass (I had my screen replaced and they could only get a blue uk screen) but the jap imports do have bronze tint yes.

The SR20DET engine is basically the same as you'd find in a 200sx - 2.0 twin cam 16v turbo and with 4wd they are quite quick, also have a mechanical version of the Skylines ATESSA 4wd system so they are fwd until traction is lost then it sends power to the back wheels (basically a centrifugal clutch in the drivetrain).

Downside of a Sunny/Pulsar GTiR - they look sh*te, the brakes are crap and they handle like p00 unless you spend significant amounts of money on them, they also have a ridiculously fexible chassis which I guess is the main reason why they dont handle!! Engines also a bit fragile and doesn't like extra boost unless you fit forged pistons!

best improvement - Remove top mount intercooler (or interwarmer as its affectionately known) and replace with front mount intercooler. forged pistons are good too!

Top & bottom strut brace front and rear & upgraded suspension.

i thort there was front wheel drive version too but obviously i was wrong. Never thort the intercoolr on top of the engine was a good idea but it did give it an ace bonnet scoop. Seen it on many standard sunny`s

There was a front wheel drive Sunny GTi, not turbo and no bonnet scoop/wing etc.

Hi,

Had the normal 2WD 2.0l GTi, great car, fast and handled very well.

Cheaper than a golf and much more fun.

Regards

My workmate Ali had a Pulsar GTiR for to years and IIRC it was on the road for about four solid months of that. Fast they are reliable they aint. The SR20DET engine (as fitted to the S14> 200sx) is a great engine, in the Sunny came with throttle bodies ect as std it just got two damn hot.

And its got to have the heaviest gearbox I have ever lifted.
