Inner Rear Tyres Wearing Unevenly

Featured Replies

Hi all,

A few months ago when I was driving on the motorway I noticed some vibrations coming from the back.

Initially I thought it might be balancing so I brought it to my local tyre center to get that checked. When they put it up on the lift the back right tyre was worn unevenly meaning there was maybe 4 flat spots and then a “bump” rotating constantly along the inside of the tyre.

The tyre center guy said that it was my back shocks and to get them changed … So I brought it to the garage and they said my shocks were fine and it was tracking …. So brought it back to the tyre center to get the alignment checked and yes it was out slightly in the back so get that corrected, a new tyre fitted and that was that ….

But now the same vibration is back and this time it is the back left L

Has anyone ever had this problem before L

Its the alignment. They are well known for "sawtoothing". Get a 4 wheel alignment done. I would recommend a specialist rather than a dealer. Many have found a specialist with Hunter equipment gives the best results. It should cost approx £40 - £80.

Lots of posts on Sawtoothing.

Some tyres more prone to it than others.

this.  after you've resolve the 4 wheel alignment then replace the unevenly worn tyres.

There's no adjustment on the back though is there?

My car had sawtoothing on the rear tyres when I got it. Alignment was checked and all OK and since replacing the tyres it hasn't come back. I swap the tyres front to rear to even the wear out and also run the pressures slightly above the unladen ones but below the fully laden ones.

More adjustment at the rear than the front.  Camber & toe both by eccentric cams.

To the OP:  Just because they adjusted the alignment doesn't mean they got it right.  They need to get the rear wheels as close to upright as possible within the manufacturers latest range & for the correct suspension type (sport or standard).  Sport is about -1 camber & std is -3/4.  Both about 2mm toe in.
