Tyre sawtooth wear

Featured Replies

Evening chaps.

I've identified saw tooth wear on the inner part of the rear tyre tread. This seems to be a common problem with the Golf Audi etc with the same suspension and gives annoying noise replicating a wheel bearing failing.

Anyway, I swopped the fronts and rears today as I was at a loose end and maybe the wear will even out, or more likely, I'll end up buying new tyres.

As the tread sawtooth wear is on the inside I'm thinking that there may be too much toe-out on the rear axle. So this weekend I'm going to get my Gunson's Trackrite on it and check. The question I have is how do you adjust the toe on the rear axle? I couldn't see anything obvious when I swapped the wheels around.

Kind regards Julian.

Hunter's 4 wheel laser alignment will cure it.

Did this on mine - all sorted. They only needed to adjust the one axle on mine - the rears. Cost me under £30 if I remember correctly.

Yes, thanks chaps. I do my own alignment, have done so for the last 30 years! I simply wanted to know how one sets  the rear axle toe?

It's caused by excessive negative rear camber, not toe.

If it's standard height suspension set the rear to negative 0.5 to neg 0.75 degree, if it's sports set it to neg 0.75 to neg 1 degree .

Toe is 2mm inwards (1mm per side). Call it 1mm to 3mm total toe.

There are eccentric bolts on the arms, 1 for camber, 1 for toe (items 11 & 10)

Thank you Brad, perfect. I shall investigate at the weekend when I get back home.

Julian.

It won't wear out.

I drove with the damned drone for months until I had money for a new pair of tyres. Bleedin irritating.

Such a waste they tyres had loads of wear left otherwise. Passed them on to a bloke from the forum that wasn't fussed about the wear.

If you reverse the rotation (if non-directional) and experiment with tyre pressures you can reduce it a lot.
