day 1: didn't enjoy it at all. track kept getting stopped for things like this... (this is a vid of the saturday)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OFB_MHfa3fQ

only did 2 laps , and hated them, spent the whole time looking in my mirrors, and diving out the way of the millions of people flying round at speed...

in short, it was WAY too busy for my liking. Track spent half the day shut!

day 2: MUCH better, MUCH quieter! had three good laps, Jasons car was not well, so I had him coaching me.... (you know thing like "this is NOT a corner.." ) pmsl....... I STILL dont have the balls to go flat out, when i cannot see where I'm going, even if someone I trust says so, I chicken out... once I KNOW whats coming myself, it will be a different matter, Jase did help a lot with me learning the track, hence I made my best time yet of 9:58 , and I had to slow and move out of the way for three people on that lap..... with a bigger set of cahonies, less traffic, and more confidence on the fast bits, I will knock a LOAD off that time :)

a guy called MATT came too , evo 5, nice bit of kit, I was a passenger in that, he helped me see how some of the faster bits can be done! this was one of his best laps... its about 500bhp, and he was topping more than 150mph at times! :o just see the speeds on the fast bits after 5:20 !!!

I really enjoyed the second day on track :)

more to follow....

  • God I would love to be at your place against that S1 (except, in my car  )   Buying a quicker car is certainly simpler, easier but in this case more expensive as well plus if you love your car as yo

Cool!

Good trip had by all then.

Still trying to convince Sven to go to the ring while we're there! lol

I need to try again in the dry.

Nice lap in the Evo. Although I still think I was more committed in Karousel. I just chucked it in and floored it. I remember catching back up with a Clio RS through there.

These are the three road warriors on this trip! (in the carpark at Spa, on the way in!)

1: Fabia II vRS estate 2: Evo 5 3: Mongrel

we were watching the renault world series on the sunday too..... we were st at the main straight, you can almost see us at the begining of this vid, big bloody crash! seen loads on tv, but not right in front of my face! :o

everyone was ok :)

Wowsers! Scary stuff.

Oh and shame the mongrel had a poorly clutch!

never mind, meant I had a "ring instructor" ;)

during my laps, I had a bit of a flat spot, around 4-5k , just seemed low on power, like the timings out on an old car! then the pronounced "kick" the CTHE has at 5k seemed to double, and it would bolt off.....

did a scan, there was a misfire on cylinder one, but not a repeated misfire, and not while I was doing a hot lap (times recorded by ECU) not enough to set off a warning light..

there was an "implausible" reading from the oil temp sensor... doubt that would have caused an issue

and some issue with the turbo bypass valve? I don't know what that is, but assuming it could be to do with the valve that shifts between turbo and supercharger , that "may" have been an issue, if its been sticking, maybe, I had no turbo (or less turbo) until the valve snapped shut under a bit more pressure, could have been diverting to supercharger....

dunno.

doesn't feel entirely happy though..... this morning I had the dreaded lumpy cold start, so my thought is the spark plugs have given up the goat.... (been in 12,000 miles)

it needs an oil change service , so I'll do the plugs again (maybe trying the ones george likes this time) and see if it fixes it...

small things, but i like it to work spot on , and fix things in the bud before they become an issue....

my last track of the season , so got Jason to turn my XDS back on for the coming winter!

more to come

a fly by on the straight!

Do you have the log of the scan Sharky? I'd like to compare the exact fault codes you had with some of mine some time ago that I still need to investigate, no rush though. There were no major faults, not even the EPC light came on (less than 10 misfires are not even being recorded, not to mention the EPC light staying off) but as you say i like it to work perfectly.

I can ask jason....not sure if he kept any info.... I just had the one misfire, (didn't say multiple) and it was at the time we were driving gently in the rain! lol.... I'll ask though.

last vid, the doughnuts!

did you go into Rent4ring?  Brother said he had some skoda owners in over weekend?

  • Author

nope..... the evo owner went to rent, then bought an RX8 wheel for the evo!

first vid from the front for the saturday... didn't like it, WAY to busy, you can see me just having to get out the way instead of driving a lap :(

Best time to go is first thing in the morning, it's normally quiet then, but not so much to look at in the car park! :)

We usually stay about 30-mins away from the Ring and you can leave the Hotel early go to the Ring and do a couple of laps and be back in time to catch the end of breakfast.

never mind, meant I had a "ring instructor" ;)

I heard he is a sound fellow and can even get the most amateur ring driver under 10 minutes, :D

from the rear camera on the sunday, better for traffic! much more fun...

second part of the lap from the rear camera

Looks like you had fun! Did you come back via calais? I'm about to head out to Europe in the morning. Wondered if I needed to leave more time for the ferry coming back?

  • Author

Have fun mate. Will be interested to hear what you think needs upgrading first after a few laps...hahaha.

POWER!!!!!! I like to think my car is fast... but its not. to mix it with the ring traffic, i need another 100-150bhp..... Its such a fast lap, such high speeds... on an airfield circuit its fine, and can mix it with the more powerful stuff, on the ring, its too slow :(

I feel a hybrid, exhaust, intercooler, and map coming on.....

no , we did dover - dunkirk and return.....

we missed our evening ferry because of traffic. we did the last hour at +++ mph, but it didn't help! lol.... weather was horrendous in Belgium.... much more dangerous than driving the ring! :o

a lot of people seem scared of the Karousel, its quite hard on suspension... i was litterally tring to take off on the exit :) loved it!

I remember Shaun saying you had no fear on it ;)

Since you got left behind by that A1 at the start of the video I would have to agree with more power (if it was a S1 you are forgiven....hahaha). Exhaust, intercooler, intake and stage 2 map good for another 50bhp.

More money, more mods and more experience and you can worry most things, as the driver does on these vids.

(personally i would just scare my shelf and need wipe clean seating and fresh laderhosen.)

Spending £22,000 or so on a Used Seat Leon Cupra 280 is a quick and cheap why to more power.

(or a bit more until they get cheaper for an Estate.)

You certainly don't need to spend that money George, at least if we're primarily talking about speed. Incidentally, I test-drove the Cupra 280 1 week ago, expecting to be blown away from its power. I honestly have to say here that, at least up to 180km/h it felt no quicker than my stage 2. And bear in mind that I really wanted it to, in order to have a good excuse for changing cars (official excuse: we need more space) Especially the in-gear accelerations from 50 and 80kmh onwards felt even a bit slower if you can believe it. I surely expect the Cupra to be accelerating quicker past 180km/h but how often do you need acceleration at that range? This just goes to show how insanely fast is a stage 2 twincharger up to 200km/h for what it actually is. I had timed a lot of in-gear accelerations myself after the stage 2 already and the numbers were more than impressing  (0-100kmh: 5.8s , 80-110 (3rd gear): 2.9s !!), but still didn't believe that it would match (to say the least) a 2015 280bhp car.  If you look carefully, the power/weight ratios are not too dissimilar:

vRS: 225bhp/1.2ton (crash bar weights off / no driver) = 187.5bhp/ton

Cupra: 280bhp/1.45ton = 193bhp/ton

Combined with the necessary suspension upgrades, makes the car a real weapon as mmmRacer has proved by dominating the championships in his class with his own stage 2.
