Replacing sidelights with LED bulb...

Featured Replies

With sidelights being used for making yourself more visible rather than for actually lighting the road ahead, I was just wondering if it's possible to get an LED bulb that plugs straight into the normal fitting with no modification? Mine are fine at night but in funny lighting conditions during the day - such as when the sun's low and there are a lot of long shadows etc - they're not that effective.

Cheers

just done mine, think they are 501 bulbs if i remember right. 99p for the pair off fleabay. bulb holder just pulls out of the back of headlight but you may need some long nose pliers to make your life easier. they only work one way round so check they are working before you push them back in the headlight. if not working, just pull em out the bulb holder and turn the bulb 180 degrees and refit and check.

The correct name for sidelights is parking lights. If the car is moving and you needs lights so that others can see you use dipped beam - reference the Highway Code rule 115 and others.

LED bulbs are an easy swap. Spend about 10 quid for a reliable and not-blue pair in my experience.

For for cree.

The parking light is the one you leave on when the engine's off by cranking the indicator stalk up or down depending on which side you want. Sidelights are the setting below dipped.

Same bulbs, just both sides at once when you have light switch at first click round.

Same bulbs just using one or both. Side lights (really parking lights) are too dim for use to enable others to see you. Dipped headlamps are the minimum that should be used. DRLs can be used to make the front of the car visible but then no lights are displayed at the rear. better to have too much light showing rather than not enough.

I wouldn't go with leds for sidelights if you have standard halogen bulbs on main an high beam. It will look **** in night. Stick with the main beam during day driving as well and you should be fine.
