VRS Grumble under Load, about 1500rpm, usually 2nd gear

Featured Replies

Noticed a grumbling noise on my car after a trip to london in stop start traffic, seems to be around 1500rpm as theres a noise that occurs.

Also does it when the engine struggles slightly, IE, change into second with low revs and accelerate it happens then.

Also did it this week whilst going up a slight bank in 4th at 30mph, as the car began to use more torque it grumbled away again.

I cant put my finger on what it sounds like to describe it, a low grumbling tone maybe?

Any ideas or has this happened to anyone else?

Could be the DMF starting to complain. Especially as its at low rpm then an input of torque.

DMF. My brother had a SMF fitted and said it was great. I think my wifes PD130 Audi A3 had an SMF fitted and I have never noticed it. I say I think, it was a few years ago and it was done when the gearbox was replaced.

Mine did the same when being mapped, at 2.3 bar of boost the DMF really became loud under heavy WOT load at low rpm, we backed the boost back to preserve the DMF life and its been fine since

Oh great :/ large repair bill then! Is there anyway to confirm its the dmf? The clutch still feels new so I assumed the dmf would be in similar condition. Car has done over 90k. What happens if the dmf is failing? Is it a car stopper or can it be driven regardless?

Check it for play when you remove the box, if it disintegrates then it's game over for that gearbox if it goes straight through

If it only does it when you provoke it from certain low rpm throttle openings drive round it? Can go on for tens of thousands of miles if you avoid putting it under undue strain.

I've read there is one or two inspection holes to check the DMF without removing the box, can someone confirm this? It was on the Seat forums.

I was thinking of driving round it as its not as bad as some peoples, i've heard it referenced as a mad midget trying to hammer its way out of hell, but its nothing like that at all.

If i do come to replace it and its definitely this, I've been reading up on the Valeo clutch and SMF kits, does anyone have any experience with them? According to their technical data sheet they state the way they have created the kit replicates the effect the DMF has on reducing vibration into the cabin whilst maintaining the reliability of a SMF - seems like an obvious no brainer to replace it with?

Not sure on Valeo ones but I know the darkside equivalent shakes like a ****ting dog on idle

I'll avoid that one then - what would you reckon as far as actions go. If its driven gently i cant hear it much so i'm assuming its likely to prolong the life of the DMF if its that. But i've heard your engine will rattle in idle if your DMF is going, mine doesnt at all. Just the auxilliary belt and tensioner squeaks as its due to be replaced.

Has anyone else confirmed if there is an inspection hole for the DMF to check for movement over taking the box apart?

Thats the circlip removal and shim washer install isnt it ? I had that problem a while ago meant i couldnt disengage gears properly and the car kept crawling with the clutch down...

I installed that and it went away ! So it cant be that again can it? Note i replaced it on the passenger side as per most of the videos, unless you need to do both sides (total car anatomy noob here)

Theres only the one end of the gearbox you can work on Aaron.

Mechanical Noobery FTW! Ah so theres nothing to place the same washer on the RHS.

I've just had to change my driving at the minute, i used to change gear relatively early, pre 2k on most roads. I find it doesnt growl under normal driving now provided i change after 2k rpm. However on hills its still a bit grumbly unless i change gear at a higher rev.

If it is the DMF though, shouldnt there be issues with the engine at idle? As its no louder than usual, doesnt rattle about etc. The only rattle i have is from the auxiliary tensioner being replaced this weekend.

It'll prob be fine at idle for ages fella. My ex missus has still got a 206 Hdi GTi with a very worn DMF, you could make it audiably "clonk" by letting the clutch up pulling off the drive, but it never made a racket at tickover.

Just plod on and stop worrying!! lol
