Noisy petrol engine after switching to Synthetic oil

Featured Replies

Hello, my 1.2htp 2010 model now sounds like a diesel engine, after switching oil from semi to fully synthetic. In fact it was the TRIPLE QX 5w40 Fully Synthetic Engine. It was a lot quieter before the switch and has progressively got worst.

I considering switching back to semi. Does anyone have previous experience of this. Thanks

Did you refit sump plug?

Not a fan of EuroCar Parts stuff tbh, of course it's fine to use but personally I'd probably go to TPS / Skoda and order 5l of Genuine Quantam

This sounds like a problem I've had in the past. It wasn't as a result of an oil change for me though. I simply started the car and when I revved it sounded like the engine was gonna fall apart. I could literally feel it vibrating under my feet. I turned it off and back on again (as you do with all electronics these days) and it was fine. Still no idea what it is but it happens from time to time.

If that's the only thing you've changed then that would be the first place to start, I guess.

Thanks guys for the reply.

I am planning on switching back using castrol gtx 10w40 a3/b4 part Synthetic oil to see what difference it makes.

Any opinions.

Dello, your car should be using fully synthetic oil anyway. Don't mess with semi synthetic oil even if it meets the specs. If you have been using semi synthetic oil the engine will most likely have accumulated some degree of sludge, even if that oil meets the same spec as fully synthetic oil. Semi syn goes off spec very quickly compared to fully syn. This sludge will be cleaned out if you go to using fully synthetic and the engine may well sound a bit noisier. It's not uncommon to find this. Fully syn keeps the engine very clean inside, particularly the sump area and the hydraulic tappets. However, just to make sure everything is ok I'd check the oil pressure. Any sludge that's been removed may get stuck around the anti-drain valve and make her very noisy on start up because the oil had drained back into the sump.

change the oil filter again , assuming you used a cheap pattern one , a faulty oil filter can cause the problems you have

I will change the oil filter first and see if it helps.

So I should stick with 5w40 fully synthetic then, and is it worth renewing the oil to clean out the sludge.

I did notice that it gets a bit noisy when the engine warms up too.

Thanks all for the advice. Just a bit worried after what seem to be a fairly quiet engine before the oil switch.

?

How many miles has the engine done and what servicing has it had other than Oil & Filter changes?

What Oil had you in before you switched to the correct oil,

and for how many miles was there Semi Synthetic in?

What sludge have you, there should not be any,

and how many miles is it since you changed the filter and put in the Triple QX 5w 40 Full Synthetic?

Bought the car 4 months ago with full Skoda service records with semi - synth 10w40 oil on receipts.

So the car has probably had semi synth. for 5 years or less.

I decided to change oil with filter 2 months ago (300 miles roughly), as it was so thin and absolutely a nightmare to read on dip stick.

The noisy engine only started about a 2 weeks ago.

So the Full Skoda Service History shows them putting in the wrong oil.

So was it given 4 Oil & Filter changes (Annually) ?

2011, 2012, 2013, 2014,  & now the 5th Oil and filter change done by you with the correct oil?

How many miles now has the car done?

Checking again, it's 4 years Skoda service and 1 year Indy. Car had 60k on the clock when i bought it.

Dello, I can't remember if your oil filter comes with a small secondary 'o' ring that goes on the filter mounting shaft before you put the new oil filter in place. However, if it does (like some of the Skoda VW range) you should check that it's still inplace and hasn't broken or been omitted. This will affect the oil pressure if it's damaged or missing. I would certainly change the oil and filter again. Semi syn is not the correct oil for your car and some sludge may well have formed. The fully syn oil is cleaning and dissolving it and that's the most likely reason your engine is noisier now. So changing the oil again is like an engine flush which is no bad thing. 60k miles on your engine means it's just run in nicely now. It shouldn't rattle unduly, but may rattle a bit more than it did. Do check the oil pressure if after the oil change it still rattles.
