VW Diesel deceit

Featured Replies

VW have admitted to incorporating software which detects emission testing when it is applied in the Lab so that their diesel engines pass the USA tests. On the open road the emissions can be up to 40 times greater than the emission limits.VW could face a fine up to $18bn.I wonder if this applies to the engines in Europe and to all 4 cylinder VAG diesel engines?

Not rapid related, previous threads have been merged by mods and can be accessed by clicking the link above :)

Nothing to do with the Rapid, but amusing nonetheless.

tbh it aint just VW theyve just been one of the first to be caught out for it. They all do it and as cars become more computerised I can see this kind of thing becoming an even bigger problem in the future! just a quick tweak with a laptop and you can program that thing to whatever you want within seconds!

They clearly shouldn't done it but the potential penalties being discussed - more than $18bn or $37,500 per car are just extortionate.  Before this, there was all ready discussion that US regulators' fines international firms are much, much more than on US companies.  It's been the case with Barclays, HSBC, GSK and BP in the recent past, all have been hit with massively disproportionate penalties. The US appear to view foreign companies as piñatas they can easily bash for as much cash as they feel they need.

the engine affected is the EA189 which I think is the EU5 1.6 and 2.0 common rail diesel engines

so my guess there is a whole load of skoda's affected as well as Seat's etc

just got to wait and see what other brands outside VAG are affected now, would love to see dodge or chevvy hit as well

Hm... eleven million cars... :peek:

Further internal investigations conducted to date have established that the relevant engine management software is also installed in other Volkswagen Group vehicles with diesel engines. For the majority of these engines the software does not have any effect.

Discrepancies relate to vehicles with Type EA 189 engines, involving some eleven million vehicles worldwide. A noticeable deviation between bench test results and actual road use was established solely for this type of engine. Volkswagen is working intensely to eliminate these deviations through technical measures.

and:

According to Volkswagen, vehicles sold in other countries with the 1.5L 4-cylinder TDI engine known as Type EA189 are also affected. The EA189 TDI is a 2.0L four-cylinder engine which includes the incriminated Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology. This software is also said to affect EA188 and the 2015 EA288 generation of the four-cylinder.
