So I've started a 1.8t build.

 

Bought a Classic X reg for £200 with no MOT but it was in not too bad nic and was quite close to me. Its a 1.4 mpi. In all honesty I don't really know everything about what i'm going to have to do, but I've wanted a project like this for a while now so I thought why not as theres a few people who have started it and I can follow them for guidance.

 

I'm looking forward  to it anyway and It's always fun working on a car.

I'm renting a garage only about 500 meters away from my flat so that's a positive however it's quite small. :S  Progress so far, I've taken the front end apart pretty much, all ready for getting the gearbox out.

 

Only problem is that a bolt head has been snapped straight off before I got a hold of it and now that one bolt is stopping the gearbox from coming off.

 

 

 

 

Take the whole lot out in one go. If you have an engine crane that is.

Have you got a donor car or just the engine, i'm halfway through mine so anything you need help with give us a shout. I've got all my info from the other lads on here.

Depending on what you are doing with the engine (tbh it probably is going to be more hassle keeping it while it sits for sale than its worth), I'd just lower the car down until the engine is sat on wood blocks, engine mounts off, raise the rest of the car back up and wiggle the engine out... then scrap it with the box

 

Tech1e and I lifted a 1.8T+box in to the back of my Fabia, can be done with two people

Interesting you are going down the AGU cable throttle method rather than a drive by wire throttle.

Cheers, I dont have access to a crane unless my work lend me one, but then I dont really have any space for the engine and box out of the car tbh, Ive got an engine, box, ecu, keys, clocks, looms ect, so hopefully everything I need, all came from a MK4 gti

Ben, Trevor, Phil and I have all used drive by wire throttle engines, so no modification of the pedal was required, just plug in and go. With the AGU you'll need to find a suitable pedal to fit from another model as no fabia has a cable throttle iirc, or modify the existing one to tug the cable.

i happen to have a modified pedal from the Bossfox FGF santa pod special which your welcome too

and tbh the AGU is easier to work on as it has slightly less electrics such as sensors etc plus it has a big valve head which flows better and is a much for big power. I would personally recommend sending the whole loom over from the golf to the fabia.   

All sounds good then not too complicated in theory, my main problem now is getting the current engine and box out, but I'm going to try the drop approach and see how that works out

Like above the 'easiest' way would have been fly by wire as most of us have done, but seen as you have the mk4 loom then it shouldn't be an issue.

So AGU has Ko3 turbo....would I get a benefit going to a Ko3s, as I know it's just a straight bolt on then just need to 'map it in'

Why not, while it's all out makes sense to

K03s will give upto around 250 bhp if you have 225 injectors, maf, fuel pump, big cooler etc. tbh i would go for a k04 setup and aim for. Biggest problem you have its an AGU engine conversion and not many decent vag specialist mappers are willing to touch them such as R tech, however Badger5 will i think but not exactly local to you

Think I'll go for ko3s to begin with and then maybe down the line do a ko4 setup and funds are slightly tight and I'd be happy with anything above 215/220

Gearbox out and everything ready for the engine to come out tomorrow night, when I get my engine crane( 6ft 7" mechanic from work) so coming along nicely...

And just got an offer accepted for a ko3s for £150 seems okay I think? 201435859755 item number...

That's standard price for a VGC k03S.  It's what I sell them for usually once I have proved they are in good nick.

 

Surprised to hear R-Tech would turn down mapping a car like this.  I thought they were all over 1.8T setups.

Sounds okay then...I've not yet spoken to any mappers no where near that stage yet, but I've got quite a few who I will contact and see what can be done for me

RTech are picky, no conversions, no cable throttle etc. But they are also flat out so can afford to be I guess. I went elsewhere as the response time and attitude put me off, found someone a bit more approachable and closer to me.
