Golf Edition 30 v Renaultsport Megane Cup

Featured Replies

golf would be a better investment, shouldn't lose that much money on it if you look after it, you can always retro spec it up a bit. The car the member on here is selling looks a peach!

The megane value will continue to drop massively as there is no cult following, not saying it's not a good car though.

Do it, you only live once after all

So despite (almost) fixing the rattle that was driving me to sell the Ibiza and fitting new tyres (which means I can actually drive it "properly") the yearnnig for a Megane is still there.

The ibiza is also due a cambelt at it's next service; so that £600 bill has be looking around.

(Man math's at it's best - spend another 3 grand to save £600! :D)

I've nosed around a couple that are local to me.

The white one with all the kit in the first post is still available and its in the "sale" and is now "just" £11,700

Alternatively there is a repaired Cat D one a few miles up the road with no xenons etc up for £8550

Save 3 grand and do without the toys?

I guess i should probably arrange a test drive and really put a nail in my procrastination coffin!

a repaired Cat D Renault sound a recipe for lots of problems and some expensive repair bills

I know its not a megane, but my Mum had a CAT D Clio 1.5 DCi and never missed a beat for the 4 years she had it. Just get someone who knows cars to look over it before you buy and you could end up with a bit of a bargain?

CAT D,  can mean Stolen Recovered, and damaged, interior stolen, glass broken, steering lock bust,

or was otherwise damaged to the point it was not getting repaired by the Insurance Underwriter.

With a Renault that could be a good thing, new Electrical stuff, keys etc properly fitted.

Its good that CAT D's generally put people off, it means there can be bargains for others that look at the receipts, current condition etc.

Just bare in mind resale for CAT D. You need to wait around for someone like yourself, who's willing to look past the category and actually properly assess the condition of the car :)

If you're keeping for a while, it can make sense. If you might look to sell on, say within 18 months - you might then wish you hadn't bothered....

As far as the Golf vs Megane debate - the only way you'll know yourself, is trying both

Renault will be more fun to drive.

Golf will be a nicer place to be and probably less painful to own.

Have driven a few cars since moving on from the Octy now, I do miss the logic of a VAG cabin.

With a Renault, that could mean it just needed a wash.

My friend has a megane 250 which has been remapped to 300bhp. The things on another planet. The way the thing goes round corners defines physics, the exhaust pops and crackles and I found the interior a rather nice place to be. And the recardo bucket seats are simply superb.

I haven't had a drive of the ed30 but i have read it is a fun car. I found the mk5 interior very bland and a bit cheap.

I would add the meganes suspension is A tad on the stiff side hence my mates nicked named it 'the boobie jiggler'....not a bad thing when you think about it lol.

First version of the new Megane chassis is in it warm 202 hp GT form, not sure why they did not use the 220 hp new Clio RS engine but it does get a 7 speed rather than 6 speed DSG/EDC.   Initial expectation was that the New Megane Cup/Trophy will get a even hotter version of the 2 litre lump circa 300 hp and aim to retake the "Ring" front wheel drive C segment record but it looks like it will use the new 1.8 TCE engine along with with the upcoming Alpine (TT type vehicle).

C segment vehicles includes Golf/Leon, Civic etc) which have held Ring fastest lap and now joined with the Clio RS which has just taken the B segment fast lap beating the Audi S1, Mini JCW etc at around 8:30.
