Strange engine cover question

Featured Replies

How are the engine cover locking pins retained by the cover itself please.

I have the pins and the grommets are in the cover but they aren't retained is there a bit missing?

Cheers

There is a small part that clips into the engine bracket that the locking screw turns and locks into. These were available from the dealers a few years ago for pennies, I will see if I can find my invoice for the part number for you.

Or do you mean something else?, as the pins and springs etc are all part of the main cover itself and are not available separate as far as I know.

You can get the bits seperately, I did the other day! Happy to post up the numbers if it helps anyone.

I have replaced the clips but is there a "captive" element to stop the locking pins coming out of the cover altogether? As it seems a bit wierd not to have a retaining system as the pins will fall out otherwise - does that make sense?

Yes and no, I ordered those bits and the washers are quite thick and the head of the locking pin is slightly larger than the opening of the washer. I guess I am just trying to make sure that the pin pushes through the washer. I don't suppose you could take a picture from the underside of the cover could you just to put my mind at rest, not tonight obviously as I am not that desperate.

As far as I can see the grommet is in the cover, the pin goes through the grommet then the washer is pushed on to hold the locking pin captive when not inserted into the clips on the various locations on the engine, is that about right?

The washers in that picture look like "Star" locking washers whereas the washers that were supplied are plain thick washers.

When you get your car back Phil, could you take a look please. Cheers

No problem.

Yes spot on. The plastic washer holds it all in place and stops the locking pin from falling out.

Honestly don't worry about those plastic bits. They are only for show and seeing as no-one sees inside the engine bay, and when anyone does they'll most probably need to be removed for work, so I just leave mine off. Even the little crappy bit under the fuel rail, gone.

I'll replace them if i sell the car but whats the point in worrying..
