I'm one of those saddo's that hates all things Apple with a passion.  My wife installed iTunes on our desktop PC at one point nad despite uninstalling everything Apple I can find I still get regular nag screens asking me to upgrade to the latest version of iTune, iCloud and iGodknowswhat.

Hope to i get rid of every i thing!!!!

It installs a few other things like bonjour service and apple device service or something like that.

You'll have to just go through the programs list one by one and uninstall anything related to apple.

Phil

There is only one way to be certain yoiu have removed i products from your PC - NUKE IT FROM ORBIT!!!!!

Bloody Apple.

I've got Itunes because SWMBO insists on having an old iPod. She never hooks it up so I've pulled all the Apple ****eware.

First time I installed iTunes it borked the whole machine so badly I had to reinstall.

If it's an old iPod, just hook a cable up and transfer your MP3's onto it.

I've used http://www.copytrans.net/copytransmanager.php before with my ancient iPod (actually an iPhone 3GS I "borrowed" from the office with no SIM card, but same theory). Much smaller download, less intrusive (doesn't insist on QuickTime/Bonjour/etc) but works just as well for me.

Just curious......why do you hate all things Apple??

I have found my life easier as a result of Apple.

Haters will always be haters!!

Personally I don’t see the point of the whole Apple / Android / Windowz etc argument.

Pick what works for you and get on with life without the need to constantly slag the competition off.

For me the sheer build quality of Apple stuff (no cheap flimsy plastic) was enough to convert me, wouldn’t go back now.

I wonder if the HATES have actually tried Apply products???

I am an Apple user, but NOT an Apple 'fanboy'  I do not hate or dislike Android or Windows Mobile as I have no experience of the systems, therefor am unable to draw myself to a conclusion.

They deserve their place in the tech world, just as much as Apple and iOS do.

And your spot on there Gizmo68. :)

I had a Samsung smart phone for work and really did not get on with the OS to the point I got another sim card and reused my old iPhone5 for work.

No idea on Windows phones either but I hated the Windows 8 OS in the limited use I have had.

We are all different however, some of it may be connected with age... the older you get the more you appreciate build quality? I know I certainly do.

For me, it's always been the users, rather than the equipment or Apple themselves. I used to work in a university where people would buy Apple kit because it was shiny and "cool" even though it was the wrong thing for the job, and then when they couldn't do their job with it it would be my problem to fix it. Even when a) I told them it wouldn't do the job in the first place and it was the wrong thing to buy and B) there is no fix because the software just doesn't exist.

We once spent ~£3k on a Mac Pro workstation with the same hardware specs as a ~£1.3k PC, the first thing the recipient did with it was Boot Camp Windows 7 onto it to install the software they needed for their research, adding to the cost even more because we couldn't use our site license to upgrade the OEM license since there was none. Total waste of money just because one user wanted a shiny Mac.

For me it's the lock in and device restrictions for starters.

Next is the wow look what we've invented when rehashing stuff and making the followers drool uncontrollably.

Video calling, paying for stuff by NFC, fingerprint readers etc etc. It's all been done before, it's not new despite what the glossy adverts and keynote speeches want you to believe.

I'm not an apple fanboy, but I must admit I'm a big fan of the iPad, I have 2 samsung tablets as well and they are both brilliant at what they do, however for what I use it for the iOS software is just much more stable and reliable.

I agree with you gadgetman, to a certain point.

There is a reason why Apple have a 'lock-in' and thats to reduce the amount of malware in the apps.

I see your point about claiming rehashes as inventions, but don't forget that Apple did indeed create fresh impetus into the mobile phone industry when the original iPhone was launched in Sept 2007.

Just look what was being offered just before that.................dull or what???

I don't particularly drool over new products, I had my iPad 3 for 3 1/2 years before updating it to the iPad Air 2 and thats only because some features in iOS 9 were not available in my iPad 3 due to its firmware & software restrictions due to age.

Apple needs Samsung, HTC, Motorola, Sony as well as Android and Windows mobile to keep it an innovative company just as much as they need apple to 'keep them on their toes'

NFC is very handy as I don't have to carry a bulky wallet.

There is a place for everybody in the tech world, and I look forward to what is to come in the future.

Yup. Nokia was still toying with capacitive screens which all our tablets and mobiles now use as standard. Touch screen was primarily only on PDAs/windows CE phones.

Had Nokia not clung to Symbian the story for Apple would have been very different.

As to similarities between iOS and Android, you have to remember Apple and Google both sit on each others board. Google bought Android and almost immediately Apple started development of the iPhone.

Don't like they way they work (used to Windows and Android) but most of all don't like the way they want to take control by forcing you to use proprietary  formats

Yes, and what a PITA it is trying to get it to play nice with non-Apple equipment, or even connect to a non-Big Four phone network.

The wife (for my sins) uses a 4S, an elderly friend got a hand-me-down 2nd Generation iPad, and to my horror, my parents have bought an Air.

I have made it quite clear that I wont have ANYTHING to do with sorting out any problems crappy Windoze is bad enough.

Besides, I am TRYING to make the time to play with Ubuntu (using it is OK, knowing twhat to do when something doesnt work is still a challange).

As for Apple and malware, better check the recent tech news, Apple have had to have a good clean of the Apple store after malware infected a goodly percentage of it.

Used a Macbook Air for the first time this year, will never go back to Windows now.As ever, each to their own.

My life is so much better now that the wife and kids have finally removed apple from their lives. Gone are the cries of "How can I make this work?", "Why haven't I got any mobile signal in the house?", I can't connect to the Bluetooth in the car again!", and all other such issues which used to afflict the evenings at home. Now all I get is "Hey, look at what I can do now!" as they discover new and exciting things they can manage to do without crawling on their knees to worship the fruit devil.

Yes, the reason I dislike Apple products is because I've had to use them and support them where they're often a nightmare to work with.  The highly restrictive nature can make problems frustrating to try and resolve then when they're not playing ball (Itunes...ugh, the source of many problems) and the interiors of Apple hardware is either very difficult to work with or simply impossible.  On normal all in one PC's, a hard drive swap is 30 second job but on an iMac (the recent ones may not even be possible) it's a horrible two to three hour job which involves removing the entire screen assembly (really not fun with a £600 quid 27in 1440p panel) and a lot of glue and sellotape.

Admittedly while Apple lead the way in this regard, many others are following and it's just as frustrating particularly on more expensive machines where a single failure can mean the end of a machine as everything is glued or soldered together, even batteries which will lose capacity over time.  It's frustrating as I can often revive ruined laptops for little money but when it comes to Apple and some of the other similar machines I can't do anything economical and many cases now I wouldn't touch them as I know how difficult they are to work with.

Personally I dislike using Apple devices because it's pretty much you do it Apple's way or you don't whereas I prefer having the choice of how I want to use my device.  It doesn't need to be anything as extreme as rooting a device and installing custom roms, it's often easy to customise something to what you want or get some little app to do it for you.  My phone isn't rooted but still I can run a completely custom launcher set up as I want and run the phone at a custom DPI to get the scaling I want as well plus a variety of other little tweaks.  It's not a case of better or worse, it's just the way I want to do it.  I can also change the battery in about 30 seconds (which I find increasingly useful with LTE, large screens and powerful processors) plus if I want more than the current 128GB I have, 200GB is now an option and will likely be able to get more during the phone's lifetime.

I do think Apple excel at their marketing and branding in convincing people they can do things with their devices they may not have tried before although I don't find the Apple stuff easier in use, it's quite often the opposite since on Android you can normally tweak or install something to make the device easier to use but not with Apple.  Particularly with NFC, there's some increasingly clever stuff you can do with it and it makes life so much simpler with accessories - I have a Sony camera with NFC and to transfer a picture to my phone, all I need to do is have the picture on the screen on the camera and press the phone against the side of the camera briefly which switches the camera to wifi, changes the phone's wifi to the camera, opens the Sony app and transfer the picture then closes it all down.  A friend has made up NFC tags for his Mum who's not great at texting, when she needs picked up she simply presses the correct NFC tag for the person to collect her and it texts them with a message that includes the current GPS location.

I've been told many, many times over the years that maybe if I used Apple devices I would like them as if the only reason you could dislike Apple devices is because you haven't used them but that just isn't the case at all for me or many others I know who have also endured the frustrations of Apple devices.  What I find particularly strange is even when people have had their Apple devices fail on them several times or some other serious problem that I've had a nightmare trying to sort, they'll still preach to me how great Apple stuff is and how it never breaks and always works first time.... :x

John

You forgot paying over the odds for an Apple approved HDD - which is in reality a bog standard HDD with a bit of extra firmware installed.

Found a link to that Apple store malware - http://www.theregister.co.uk/2015/09/21/xcodeghost_apple_ios_store_malware_zapped/

PS. Anyone else having issues with spellcheck in FireFox ?? For some reason it occasionally stops working - but apparently only on these forums. If I go and use another forum, then come back, it works again.

Yes, SWIMBO had an iPad and its the least intuitive, most restrictive piece of IT I have come across!!

Thankfully its now been ditch in favour of a 10" Windows laptop.

Agreed! We use some at work and they're awful.

They're looking at getting new ones and I'm trying to persuade my manager to get some (much cheaper!) windows tablets.

Ditto.

Have played with a few Apple toys and found them a real PITA.

I've come to the conclusion that if you know a bit about computers (I've been tinkering with PCs for 20yr now) that any restrictive system like IOS or Android can be very frustrating.

I want to run the damn machine how I want not how Apple or Google think it should be run.

Conversely if you've little experience if the guts of IT 'stuff' then you're probably more than happy to let the big companies do it all for you.

I dislike Android as well btw. Again because I hate the 'we know best' way of thinking that you get. And I see that MS is trying to go that way with Win10 but the way is till there to crack it open and fettle if you need to.

FWIW, having spent easily 20 years arsing around with PCs myself (realistically more like 26-27 years, and I'm only 33...) I'm going completely the opposite way. My first Android phone, I thought "this is awesome". I put different ROMs on it with all sorts of non-Google-approved features, changed the bootloader for a leaked engineering version for better performance, etc, etc. My second Android phone came along, and I never flashed it with anything because I liked the fact it just worked. Now on my third and again, haven't even been slightly tempted.

With regard to PCs, I've run Windows for years. I've run Linux for years. I'm thinking about buying a Macbook because it'll do the stuff I need to do for work and home (pretty much network and HTTP debugging, where *nix platforms have equally good tools as Windows, virtualisation in VirtualBox which you can use on any platform, casual home browsing and media playback, etc). It'll cost me a bit more in cash than some of the alternatives but I'm hoping it'll pay me back in the sense that I can't faff around with much of it even if I wanted to and therefore it won't spend half its life broken or subpar in some way. And I'll have other computers to do that on if I really, really want to. I seem to be getting to the point where I deal with broken crap all day every day for a living, when I go home I should probably not be doing the same thing :)
