Dashboard deformation

Featured Replies

Hi!

I had parked my car outside in the heat for a long time this summer with an anti slip mat on the dashboard. This ominous mat formed a terrible impression on the dash. Hope someone can provide me some ideas on how to fix this.

I haven't yet been to the dealer to ask his opinion on how to fix this. A complete replacement of the dash is something I dread.

Your picture has not worked unfortunately.

Perhaps take the mat off and warm the dash up? Failing that get a trim fitter to cover it in leather/Suede? :)

There was another post of here a year or so ago from someone who had put a hot coffee cup on the dash which had caused some heat rings/marks in the plastic.

I think in the end he was able to make a satisfactory repair (although perhaps not perfect).

I'll try to see if I can find it.

I also cannot see your picture so I have no idea how bad it is.

A cheap solution is to just buy another not-slip-mat to put in the same place.

Just thinking, there are also specialist plastic repair companies out there who might be able to look at it.

Try a hair dryer to warm it up again to see if it gets it shape back

^^^ This.

Actually if I remember well, this was the solution to the coffee cup rings...
Its coming back slowly.....

Thanks everyone for your comments.

I tried yesterday to put a picture of the dash inline with my post, but I couldn't. I shall try it once again this evening.

The hair dryer idea sounds good. Would be nice to know what exactly was done to push the rings back into shape - don't want to end up worsening the situation  ;) .

I have been trying to look for the other post where this problem was resolved, but no luck as yet; would really appreciate if any of you manage to find it.

I had exactly the same problem with a previous car and sorry to report that whatever I tried failed. I was advised that any attempt to use heat etc was likely to cause rippling of the dash surface. Left it alone and lived with it & when sold was not mentioned.

Finally managed to get the picture in.

Hope you can see the unwanted concentric circles!!!

Actually looks as though its delaminated from the foam layer beneath...whatever it was has gotten so hot its broken down the adhesive underneath.

Sorry to say it but I think the only way you'll resolve it is a new dash @ lots of $$$

This, as soon as I saw the photo I though "oh f**k!".  Looks knackered that.

It could be that the plasticiser from the non-slip mat has migrated into the dash plastic making it slightly raised. I would still try the hairdryer on it. Maybe if that doesn't work spray a bit of WD40 over it and try heating it again. Bit of a long-shot though, I'll admit.

Or cover it with the non slip mat  :D

Looks like aliens have caused it

Buy the exact same non grip mat, place it on the other side, hope the same thing happens again and tell everyone you got the b&o non intrusive speaker upgrade.

Alternatively, use Google to find out who manufactured the dash, send them your photograph to see if they can suggest a solution. You won't be the first, or the last, to do this!

The only Octy with its own crop circle!

You should be proud ;)

Before trying some of the more risky suggestion, I would drop in to Skoda or a garage that does interior improvements to ask them if they have any simple suggestions.

I'm sure it will be something they've seen before.

I've read about this happening before. Never seen a solution though. Only prevention, ie, don't use the pads in question.

Totally agree on that. I shall call up my dealer or maybe just drive over to him one of these days. Shall keep you updated on what he has to say.

Yes. The pad has already gone straight down the bin.

hmmm looks bad but if you wont be able to fix it then i think instead of going for a new dashboard a cheaper option probably would be to get it covered in leather which would also bring the resale value up ;)
