Own or know someone with a Vauxhall Zafira?

Featured Replies

Just browsing the net and come across this, seems to be quite a few randomly setting on fire with the ignition off. Thought I'd join the Facebook group Vauxhall Zafira Car fires just out of curiosity and there's quite a few who have had this happen to them.

It appears to be a heater resistor causing the fires. I don't own one but I'm sure you lot do or know of someone.

I just hope nobody is injured

It doesn't appear to of injured anyone yet thankfully. Just thought it was worth sharing with the community as we are fairly big and someone must own or know of someone who has one.

I could be weong, but pretty sure Lloyd (with the ultra low milage mk1 octy vrs) has or had a Zafira, seem to remember a thread about the breaks being brilliant at low speed compared to what he had his octy...

Finding if a bit difficult now to aim any criticism at any other manufacture as the owner of a VAG vehicle!

I got a Zafira 1.6 manual as a hire car in Austria a couple of years back. My heart sank when they told me as I'd ordered a diesel VW. 3000km later and I couldn't fault the little jigger. Even the fuel economy wasn't terrible - 8L/100 with 4 adults, 4 large bags and an extremely heavy right foot.

I'm not. Valxhall are s***e.

Says a Fabia owner!

Not for much longer, tomorrow I'm trading it in.

For a Fabia.

^^^^ whot for a Vauxhall,

I had a Zafira as a hire car for an overseas trip for work back in 2008.

A 1.9 diesel I think it was? Did close to 10,000 miles in it over 4 weeks after travelling through Spain, France, Italy, Switzerland, Czech Republic, Poland, Belgium, Germany and Denmark.

I really quite liked it.

Here it is in Spain...

Just checked on the DVLA's tax checker website and it is taxed and MOT'd so it is still alive somewhere!

For what they are they're not a bad car to be fair.

Those 1.9 CDTI engines are pretty rock solid I believe too.

All cars have their faults... just that a fault that causes the car to set alight is a bit frightening!

I've got one and it's perfect for our needs, yes it's not as good to drive as my vRS or the BMW, but it's good a moving people around and that is what we need it to do. To be fair my 14 plate vRS has 'broken down' more offen than the Zafira which is older and has more miles.

I used to have the use of one and I used it to move once, was amazing how much I could fit into it with the way the seats moved around and I got 56mpg from it on a 600 mile round trip of no real consideration of mpg. I almost bought one a few times since tbh.

As for the whole fire thing, it would utterly put me off regardless of how founded or not it was in it's reasoning. In 1988 a tragic car fire happened with friends of ours and the devastation it caused was horrific. My sister and I used to play with the girls at our house as their aunt lived next door. I can still remember being told after it had happened that Melanie was coming round and trying to explain to me about the extent of her injuries so as not to shock me or be in any way insensitive to her. She liked a bendy Fireman Sam toy I had and set to work trying to stuff it into a big dump truck thing I hads cab. :o I was rather cross about how it split him, but I didn't say anything and was rather impressed at how she had managed to do it without hands and how positive, happy and energetic she was just like before it happened. I have long since lost contact with her, but she has gone on to do really well and is married with kids now. Any prospect of a random car fire though is something that frightens the life out of me!

^^^^^ At least you can spell the name of the brand your critical about,I've owned two and to be fair both great and driven a van for over 15 years with the harsh treatment it got didn't do too bad,I can only speak as I find after driving over 100,000 miles in them.

The fire thing would worry me, but didn't a Ferrari have an issue with one of their models going on fire. With regards to all vauxhalls being ****e, I have owned a 61 plate astra and has been one of most reliable cars I have owned, just seems to get on with everything asked of it.

I am a volunteer in St John Ambulance and we have some old 03 Zafira 2.0DTi's and whilst not exactly spritley, they are extremely well screwed together and feel like they are built like a tank.

I've got one and had started this in off topic as I know the cause of the fires:

http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/375197-zafira-engine-fires/

Our 2014/63 Zafira is ace, great mpg for 1.6 petrol, well screwed together in Germany, very high spec and cost under £10k (brand new/first owner on V5) for a full seven seater which makes any Skoda look terrible value in comparison!  Of over 300 cars I've had, it is easily one of the best and does central Poland in 17hrs (+ferry time) fully loaded!

Simple to put right with a new fan/resistor pack, but the risk of fire is worrying in a family car until it is sorted.  My experience of Vauxhall so far has been excellent, let us hope they get this right asap.

  • 2 weeks later...

Watchdog covering this tonight in 10 minutes on BBC1.

"Why no recall Vauxhall?" seems to be the main question...

This finally made news here today - a Zaf went on fire waiting for an estuary ferry in cork this morning...

edit - it was an opel zafira, not a vauxhall... in case it may have made any difference..
