Alternator Clicking

Featured Replies

Evening Gents,

During an MOT test 2 months ago I was advised of a noise coming from the alternator but it was only faint so I didnt think anything of it.

Today driving back from work I parked up a mile away from home at a cash machine and there was a loud clicking noise (like listening to rice crispies in a bowl) coming from the engine bay.

After lifting up the bonnet the noise was definatley coming from the alternator.

I turned the engine off and back on again and it was gone again.

Any ideas on what I should be changing or fixing as obviously I would like to have a sweet running car.

Cheers

Alternator pulley. It has a clutch/freewheel mechanism to reduce stresses on the belt. They don't last as long as the car sometimes.

By pulley u don't mean the aux tensioner? Is it a costly replacement? I've recent replaced the aux tensioner thinking it was that but no difference on mine that sounds to have the same issue

you need a special tool to change it

No, I mean the pulley on the alternator. I've not experienced this failure myself, so wait for someone who has to confirm, but I think other than a failed bearing in the alternator, it's the only candidate. You and the OP should try to record the sound in a little video and post it on here.

As above,can be a nightmare.

A refurbed alternator is only circa £90 with a pulley already fitted.

Because I am due to sell the car I am looking for cheapest route to sort. Part of me just wants to change the pulley for 40, but is there are chance that won't fix it and I wish I would have bought an alternator instead. Can get them on car parts for less for about 120. Might ring round skoda scrapers this morning. I can only get it sorted in a weeks time - will it be ok to drive untill then you think?

Good route to take, and buy a replacement, as a new buyer doesn't want to be picking the fault-up, nor be knocking on your door for compensation??

Is it the same pulley as for the 1.4 mpi engine? Do you have a part number for it ?

Pretty sure the MPI doesn't have a clutch on the alternator pulley.

erm...I'll need to change the pulley in this case...it's whining in the morning. I tried to give it a cup of coffee but it refused it though.
