Using a heat-gun on faded plastics. Video

Featured Replies

I had heard of this a while back - even bought a heat gun ages ago....  Only unboxed it tonight as I had decided to see what would happen on my mate's Doblo van (borrowing it whilst mongrel off the road again....)

For a first try I think it went well.  Definitely the key is to keep the gun moving though.  I can imagine it would start properly melting it very quickly indeed if held still.

Probably also burned a quid's worth of electric, so might in future stick to using solution finish like I usually do.

You wont catch me doing that!!

I did the trim on my civic a couple of months ago - it worked well

Impressive:  anyone have any thoughts/experience on whether this would be longer lasting than lotions and potions?

I laugh in the face of danger :D

But I wouldn't be doing this on a customer car. No way. :)

Me neither...Or any of my friends'/relatives' cars either!!

Yes - I think you are right.  I took the view of doing it once to bring the colour back, then leaving it for a few weeks to 'bed in' after which I'll treat it with the C4 I have ready based on your previous recommendation.

Waste of time, you do it once it last a couple of months and then the plastic goes white which looks twice as bad!

I did mine, then applied autoglym bumper gel too looked amazing, couple months later all the trim has gone it to patches of white. I'm now going to plastidip them instead.

We'll see.  I had a look around it just now and the coverage isn't great from the melting.  I may have another go at the weekend, and top up with Solution Finish.

Yeah, have a big pot in the garage. It's my usual go to, but in this case I wanted to literally play with fire. :D

I tried this on my Mk1 Golf plastics worked like a charm initially but from memory it didn't last very long before the faded color came through.
