If I have to bin the Fab...

Featured Replies

As I've mentioned in another thread, I've got a serious dilemma about my car. £350 in MOT repairs, plus the issue that my clutch could go any day, on a car that cost me £550.

Supposing I have to get rid of the Fab, at the moment I would literally only be able to spend about £500 on the next car to last me around a year, with insurance to cost me no more than what I'm paying on my 1.9 SDI. So I'm debating what to look for. My thoughts at the moment are as follows, I'd love other people's thoughts.

- Another Fab - 1.9SDI or 1.4TDI (but the latter don't go for less than £1k as far as I can see) as I don't think I'd get a decent petrol for £500.

- Felicia 1.3 or 1.9D -

- Polo mk2 or mk3 1.3cl

- Polo mk4 1.2

- A.N.Other?

I'd love a MKIV Golf but the 1.9TDI is too expensive for me to insure at the moment, which is a shame.

Any £500 car WILL be a ****ter and WILL need money throwing at it.

Better the devil you know I say, spend the £350 on your existing Fabia and baby the clutch until it absolutely HAS to be done, it's an SDI for crying out loud, it doesn't have enough power to knacker the clutch unless you're towing with it.

I agree, better spend the money fixing what you've got - although I haven't seen your other thread listing current problems.

£500 spent on another car  (even one with 12 months mot) could buy you a bunch of potential future problems.

Others may disagree but I tend to think of £500 in the ballpark to get an old car another year's motoring.

Much cheaper if you diy some of it of course.

Better the devil you know.

Exactly. You know this vehicle well.. you know what needs doing. As above, any £500 motor needs something doing to it, hence the price..

Is it not worth smashing it through the MOT and saving for a new car/clutch.. if push comes to shove - there are some decent zero percent on purchases Credit Cards out there if your clutch goes and you need a replacement.

Cheers guys, assuming nothing bigger comes up, I'll stick rather than twist!

Just out of interest then, which of the above options do people consider to be the best? Something in me really wants to own a Felicia some day for the retro-ness!

At that price it's all on condition. If you can find a Sunday driver, kept in a car port and oil change frequently you're on a bargain. Or it could be a cheap crap banger that has rust and every bush is rotten.
