RNS510 Repair

Featured Replies

Does anyone know a place or person who can repair my Nav unit? :)

Around the Midlands (Nottingham, Derby, Leicester, Lincoln) area would be nice.

It works sometimes and is better with the Disc in, but after use it will not start again, within an hour or so but will start mostly the next day :'(

I used hazzydayz who are in St Albans so a bit of a trek, but they were very good, and work with couriers.  But hopefully Rustynuts will see this and will offer some advice - he knows his stuff.

RNS510 shouldn't need a disc in it. The maps are saved to the hard drive. Can you confirm it is an RNS510 unit?

My older one needed a disc because I couldn't get the unit to load the maps to the hard drive due to a dodgy cd laser (until I discovered the SD card method).

Hi, Sorry Rustynuts for not coming back sooner. It is a RNS510 it just seems to work better with the Nav Disc in for some reason?

I think it must have a slow dying problem as it will not re-start after it has been used, say within half an hour or so but will work the next day.

I retro fitted it around 7 years ago and have put my original radio back in for the time being.

I was looking at a 'Chinese' type unit that look very similar http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/RNS510-STYLE-HD-DVD-GPS-SAT-NAV-SKODA-FABIA-OCTAVIA-RAPID-ROOMSTER-SUPERB-YETI-/111851873731?hash=item1a0ae425c3:g:5QcAAOSwhcJWLlRS

Also it seems that some newer Skoda units drain the battery?

Cheers

Russ

Does sound like a hardware fault there on your unit.  Might be fixable, but age dependent might be better sourcing a different unit. The battery drain issue depends entirely on what you have at the moment (both CANBUS gateway and RNS510), Is it actually an RNS510 or the Skoda Columbus version?

Skoda Columbus I assume as it has the Skoda Logo.

Right, just that there are a couple of slight differences between the two. I presume you retrofitted it, since you say you've refitted the original?

Yes, I put it in around 7 years ago. Also have a Fiscon Bluetooth fitted.

I have someone looking at it and he has updated the software and fitted a new part, he had it running for a couple of days on the Bench but when I plugged it in to the car it just Cycled through the Boot screen. Lucky I was still at his place, he now has it back again.

Just getting to the point where the cost will over take a replacement.

getting worried

I wouldn't worry too much. If it's been fitted for 7 years then it's a really old unit and they're dropping like flies nowadays. I've given up repairing the old ones as they just cost too much and still can die at any time. I guess it was a fan/cooler assembly he fitted was it? Sounds like it was overheating.

Before you go spending any more money trying to fix it, consider a newer unit. And before you consider buying one, drop me a pm. I'll have something in the workshop which will suit I'm sure.
