I'm fed up of my diesel noise around town and idling. Good m.p.g. is important to me but I do hate that noise. I presently use the Mk II Superb with the CR140 diesel.

 

For a Mk III replacement for my current car, I am seriously considering petrol. Ideally a hybrid but that's a few years off, so if not a diesel it would be straight petrol. I'd have to watch it's size/power though if I still want good fuel economy ( taxi ).

 

But how does the 1.4 tsi sound like compared to the 2.0 tsi ?  Which is quieter ?

 

What about cyclinder deactivation ( or is that just Audi ? ) and does that not make it sound rough / noisy ? And can you elect to not have cyclinders shut down ?

 

If I stick with diesels, have the latest ones got more refined compared to the previous generation found on the Mk IIs ?

There are a lot of reviews out there on the 1.4 act (active cylinder tech) and over all they are very positive. Reasonably quick car not going to set the world alight but still more than most of us will ever need. The engine is just as powerful as the diesel and a little quicker but less torque however te engine has been said to be much more refined and quite than the diesel one called it whisper quite on the motor way. As for the active cylinder tech they say you can tell the difference only a light on the dashboard. I am going from a diesel Renault to a 1.4 tsi act sel exec and cant wait to get it. Not had a test drive but hoping it's going to be as good as the reviews. You should have a read of the thread on is the 1.4 tsi POWERFUL enough lots of comments. Also read some of the reviews on line not read a bad one yet. There aren't many in the UK if any at the moment I might get mine before Xmas but I'm not too hopeful.

      I have a 65 reg Seat Leon Tourer FR with the 1.4tsi 150ps ACT ENGINE. The noise level is so quiet at lower revs you would think the engine was not running. As for the 2 cylinder activation you cannot tell the difference only the information light that comes on to say it is in " 2 cylinder mode".

      Hope that is useful information for you. Enjoy the new Superb when it arrives, i know i am seriously considering one for next year.

I have the new superb 2.0LT D 150Ps L&K

The engine is like a tractor when idle and in crawling traffic. It's the worst engine I have heard. I've come from a Peugeot 508 2.0d and that was so quite you would mistake it as a petrol.

I really can't believe that on a 30k car the engine sounds so loud. I know VW are usually louder than average but mine really takes the biscuit. I actually hate the noise! Ive done 3500 miles init and I dread traffic or stopping. The only way around it is the start stop but I also find that annoying. I would seriously consider the 1.4 petrol if you don't need the torque of a deisel.

Disappointing really

As the owner of an L&K 190 TDI I have to say that it's very quiet compared to some, and cabin noise levels are really excellent. There is very little engine vibration or 'clatter' so obvious in many older models. Even when 'pressing on' the noise level is not bad, and nothing like the bag of nails sound of old. Multi-pulse injectors and balance shafts do make a noticeable difference. There's more noise at speed from tyre roar.

I'm very impressed and say it compares very well against the big 3.0L 6-cyl diesels I have in our two BMWs.

The best thing you can do is go and try one out.

And yes, the Start/Stop badly needs looking at!

Strange. Am I the only one that doesn't have an issue with start-stop?

Not once has it cut the engine before becoming stationary, as I've read elsewhere here.

It's also been damn quick to restart and pull away.

Perhaps I'm just lucky? Or it's more suited to the DSG 280tsi?

(All of which has absolutely nothing to do with engine noise levels, Ho-hum.)

Maybe the 190 version is better? Or maybe there's something wrong with mine

My 1.4 tsi MK II (not MKIII) Superb is silent at tickover (clutch down to disable stop/start). I love its performance and economy so the MK III should be even better (more power and lighter!)

It is good to hear that the 1.4 Tsi is quiet and that running on two doesn't seem to be a noise issue.

 

What Tonydo says about the noise of his diesel doesn't really surprise me as I have compared my MkII's 2.0 CR140 with other makes and the Skoda/VW engine is just way too intrusive around town and at idle.  It may well be that his one has a fault but still, it doesn't surprise me what he says, coming from the Peugeot.

 

Although my first instinct as a taxi driver would be to go for a diesel, this 1.4 Tsi lets me go out of the box. The 2.0 Tsi is too thirsty for it's pants compared to the diesel but the 1.4 narrows the gap to possibly tempt me. My other concern about going petrol would be longlevity, but then perhaps nowadays petrol engines last a lot longer than they used to ( ? ).

 

I'm not saying never for the 2.0 Tsi mind and the power would actually be useful, so I ask again now, how noise levels of the 1.4 and 2.0 petrol engines compares ?

Another plus about the 1.4 Tsi is that choosing this engine lets me spec an SE -L but be allowed 17 inch wheels - the Helios. Of course they aren't as attractive as the usual ( 18 inch ) wheels on the SE - L but from a noise and ride angle its a win., especially as its a working vehicle for me.

Hello mate. I don't think their will be much in it sound wise. Your trouble here is finding someone who has test driven both.... Tsi demo cars are few and far between....

Love the sound of a Diesel, maybe try a Nissan Leaf?? ;-)

Westover Skoda, Salisbury have a 1.4 TSI ACT manual and its what I test drove before placing my order. It's quiet alright. Not silent at tick over but vibration free. Super car, can't wait for mine in the new year.

You mean between the two tsi engines ? 1.4 vs 2.0  I presume.

 

I think there definitely would be a big difference between petrol and diesel, especially around town/idle.

Now here's a thought, just theoretical for me like, as I wouldn't be buying one. .........

 

The 280. Is it noisier than the 220 ? Does it rev higher by default or only if you need it to ? Noisier or Same noise as 220 ?

Is the TDI 150 the same EA288 engine, or the EA188/189 series?

The EA288 has anti-vibration tech (twin contra-rotating balance shafts) and different fuel injectors to the earlier units. Could it be that making the differences between them?

What engine type is the 190?

Hej i live in Sweden and a couple of weeks ago i orderd a new Superb L&K 2.0 TDI 190 DSG Combi

I got bw46 my current car is a Superb 160 TSI Combi from 2011 and i have to say that motorwise

on the outside yes the demo diesel o test drove is louder but on the inside it was really silent.

My soon to be 5 year old present car on the other hand is much louder on the inside.

That can probably be because of of wear and tear.

But still have to say that the Superb is the best car i have owned and i have been through a few.

If I were in your position I'd be looking at a Toyota Hybrid such as Auris Touring or Prius - Quiet, easy to drive, reliable , capable of very high mileages, no dpf/urea injection,  under-stressed oily bits, non turbo 1.8 engine & generator, regen braking - pads last for ages, well suited for urban driving
