IT Certs, Study groups in the NW?

Looking to effectively put my money where my mouth is and get myself certified.

In part to proove to myself I can actually do this stuff...

I've traditionally been a software developer, but I've always held on to the machine building and OS installing / experimenting roles. As such I'm not scared of installing and configuring windows server, sql, and so on. Of late I've got a little more into Linux, so I'm hitting that one first...

Ideally I think I'm going to head for either LPI or Novell's CLP/CLE9 as it seems to be regarded as an equivilent to Redhat, but far less.

So is anybody in the NW (Say Warrington +/- 30 miles) in a similar boat or have any tips for me.

Once I've cleared linux, I sat in borders tonight and read most of the Lpi book, nothing seemed scary, but nothing was predicted either, well the odd page I knew where it was going :D Ta Quinten!

Also as I'm aimingg at knowing OS's in order to develop nad tune applications, I'm looking at the MCSA over MCSE, although the cores appear to be about the same exams. Again flicking through the 70-290 guide, a lot of it felt familiar if I didn't know the correct way to do it.

Any other ideas or trainers / tutors in the Nw?

Many thanks for reading.

ps the reason I'm scattering over multiple OS is because I work with IBM software, eg websphere, portal, hats, lotus and it's pretty much os independant. While I don't need to be an expert in each platform I do need to be able to hold my own, at the moment I have no "proof" I can to others.

get myself certified.

About time...

(Sorry nothing constructive to add - although...how knowledgeable on Websphere are you? :rubchin: )

I'm tempted to do course based as it would focus the disperate thoughts into a week. I could not help but notcie the size of font in the MS study books, quite large... Will drop the man a pm...360 for every delegate eh, umm could be profitable this venture.

Can't find the sizer atm...will look in a mo when I've pulled my head out of this LV Manager

Cheers...is that just to run the application server (ie. with negligible demand from the apps themselves)? If so...

Somehow I think this route would have to involve a move from SPARC to a more cost-efficient platform...

I did, I am, we are :-)

Based in Carrington, between Warrington and Manchester. Our sister company deals in Business Objects, Crystal, SuperOffice and astute.

www.portalts.co.uk course outlines and schedules are all up there to for tech / developer training.

Colin, if you wanted to do some self study or just get a feel for things in more depth you can borrow some of my trainer manuals. Drop me a pm if I can help at all, no sales banter, I don't do that.
