now i know why they call it the superb

Erm, you like it then...

I seriously considered a 280, but doing the sums and the fact I do 20K a year (and pay for my own fuel) meant it would have been madness (if it had been a V6 then I may have been swayed :D  )

only superb owners with diesels are moaning about rattles and vibrations

Can’t say I have read about rattles etc apart from on Nick’s car, which no doubt will be an easy fix.

Rubber gromit and a bit of Velcro ;-) After a week driving to / from and around Filey ... Yeah its a cruise missile of a car ! Going to be great fun when it can be opened up.... Then on the other hand a Limo if you feel that way inclined...

Yes i do love it,i also appologies for being detremental to diesel owners, financially they answer many questions, especialy company car drvers, its just a personal thing! As a footnote,i specced a bmw 528i,a comparable car in performance and size,to match that of a 280 L&K,only 16 grand more!!! Dear that badge.

The rattles i mentioned were the machanical type, not nicks gromit! Kevin.

The only petrol engines I have really loved are the E30 M3 (high revving) and the 6+ cylinder ones due to their torque... which I now get from a diesel with the added bonus of polluting stupid people at the same time  :D

I agree about 6+ cylinder cars, unfortunately a bmw 528i is now a four cylinder, the new boxster is going to be a four cylinder,a dying breed now, shame.as far as torque is concerned the 280 is within a nats **** of the 190 tdi,so its not lacking, bet you want to stick youre tail pipe down my throat even more now!!

I'm looking forward to picking up my 190 oil burner early Jan :-)

Oh, I do wish you'd use the space bar now and again.

I loved my octavia 111 tsi vrs,but the new wheels,a 280 L&K,what a machine, cant believe the difference in quality, refinement, ride, with the adjustable dampers set to comfort,a motorway cruise is a joy, smooth as a babys bum,the leather a different class, easy equal to bmw,the paint finish, the well damped switchgear, the ultra refined petrol engine, when you return to a petrol powered motor you really question why you had diesels,ok you save a score a week, but at what price, only superb owners with diesels are moaning about rattles and vibrations, and all this for just five grand more than my highly specced, though poorly specced compared to the L&K,octavia i thought was the bees knees.five grad, feels like twenty!! Those of you waiting for yours to be delivered, youre in for a treat, they really are superb!! If this doesnt win car of the year, there is no justice in this world!! Be the jag xe that wins it,cos its a jag,but we know different,we have a superb, and were proud of it!!!!

In sport how does it feel compared to the VRs?

I took a test drive. The only available superb was l and k 190 diesel. I thought it drove fantastic apart from slight engine noise and not quite as fast as what I expected. I was interested in the petrol version though so they arranged forbacrest drive in a Octavia vrs 220

I loved the extra poke andcrev of the petrol engine so settled on petrol for the order. The biggest thing that impressed me was the quiet and luxurious feel if the superb over the Octavia. I thought the Octavia drove fantastic but the two are leagues apart in respect of refinery and general luxury feel.

Order the estate sel exec petrol end of Sept. Been given build date of beg Dec. Might fingers crossed see it this year!!!! If not January. Can't wait!!!!!!

It's a big old barge though .... Don't expect it to handle like a Vrs. My Scout was much stiffer and you can def feel the difference in the twisties.

Now I just have to practice the old adage of slow in and fast out .... In fact very, very fast out :-)

Not too fast though, please remember that you are now driving a gentleman's shooting brake..............

The fastest and safest way to handle a bend is to match your speed to the bend on approach, maintain that speed through the bend, and accelerate on the exit of the bend.

It's Newtons first law of motion "An object at rest stays at rest and an object in motion stays in motion with the same speed and in the same direction unless acted upon by an unbalanced force".

That unbalanced force is your steering - forcing the car to go in a direction it doesn't really want to go - which is a straight line.

Accelerating or braking during a bend will only further unbalance the car and is the main cause of cars going off the road on bends.

To "read the bend" you need to understand what I was taught as the apex point but otherwise referred to as the vanishing point or limit point.

I came across a brilliant video where the instructor has nailed it. Whilst he's on a motorcycle, the exact same applies to a car.

Sadly, too few people know how to read a bend correctly and if you're trying to be progressive there's nothing more frustrating than being stuck behind someone who excessively brakes for every bend - and so often on the bend.

At least with the 280 you stand a good chance of getting past them in short shrift!  :moon:

:-) I not to use my track day approach in the Superb !

Bends.... As usual plenty of space between me and the guy in front.

Be at the correct speed and in the correct gear as I enter the bend.

Make sure my positioning is such that I have best visibility through the bend.

Be aware that their maybe something stationary around the bend.

Keep it on the cam throughout the duration of the bend ( if it's a fast bend )

Exit the bend and accelerate.

When I say slow in its relative. I mean a safe speed for that particular bend.
