Brake pads and maybe discs too for Octavia vRS

Featured Replies

Looking to change my pads and possibly discs (if needed) on my '10 plate Octavia vRS. Having looked on the Skoda website, going through their costs pads and discs are a lot more expensive than the standard models...assuming due to the larger calipers.

Does anyone know what make Skoda use when replacing the pads/discs in the garages?

Is there a better make I should go for using carparts4less, eurocarparts, halfords or local motor factor? Not wanting to go for super cheap, would rather get a good make. Any suggestions or recommendations would be appreciated.

Cheers.

Pagid are recommended by quite a few on here and can be picked up from Eurocarparts

Just done mine all-round on my 2010 vRS - originals lasted up to 96k miles. Can't stress this enough (as I've learnt this week and there are numerous threads on here advising the same) is to physically MEASURE the rear disc diameter.

I contacted Skoda to check the size of discs fitted to my car and they confirmed they were 272mm so I had a price for OEM (laughed followed by no thanks) and then sourced prices from a mate who works at a motor-factors along with a nice discount. Discs and Pads all-round were £155. Got a price for fitting by my local independent (does my MOT each year) at £88. £243 all-in.

Went with TRW discs & pads initially but the rears were not 272mm as Skoda advised me - garage had to call me to say they were too small and I'd ordered the wrong size so had to change 272mm to the correct size of 282mm. TRW don't supply the discs in 282mm so went with Apec Discs & Pads which are pretty well-regarded.

So I've not got TRW 312mm on the fronts & Apec 282mm on the rears. More than happy.

If you change the pads, change the rotors.  Don't even consider new pads with old rotors.

Remsa is an OEM supplier to VW group as is Ferodo, Pagid & a few others.

If I was buying tomorrow I 'd get ATE Ceramic pads with ATE rotors.  Failing that, Pagid or Textar

Ask you local motor factors what brand of discs that supply then DYOR - that's what I did. In my case TRW and APEC came back with positive reviews and they also manufacture OEM parts for car manufacturers (not necessarily Skoda) but it'll do for me.

I just don't buy into this improved brakes ******** unless you are going to constantly rag your car and be constantly on the brakes?? I see little point in spending more moeny than you need to on anything other than OEM-like replacements.

What I did notice when I had my new-shoes fitted was the difference between new brakes and 96k old ones. Why did I wait for so long........ Nice bite!!!

Thanks for the replies folks.

Will give the local dealer a call tomorrow and see what manufacturer they fit and will then make some calls. I'm certainly not going for improved braking, just want to replace like for like but with a good brand. When I took the car in for a service a few months ago they said I had 20% left on the pads...surprising as I don't drive on the brakes, use the gears mainly. Thought before MOT later this month would be wise to change them over plus wouldn't do any harm.

Will heed the advice and measure the discs...great piece of advice!

I doubt they know what brand they fit - they just use whatever comes in the VAG box.

Have a look through your wheels and see what they look like - you've probably got many miles left.

As the disks are throw-away items these days I don't bother changing early to save the disc.  I intend to run these ones down until the pads hit metal (or near enough).

I have fitted mtec discs and pads to mine and they are really good and almost came out he same price as standard discs!!?

+1.

I got Pagid put on the VRS all round. Disks and pads pretty much wore out at the same rate so there was no point in just doing the pads.

Got Pagid from ECP with the forum discount (33% at that time) and had them fitted by an indy.

Checked with Skoda for a price on parts and their prices were comical. £200 to supply front disks only.

I fitted Pagid discs & pads all round to my octavia vrs & im more than happy with the quality & performance.
